The Michigan Daily-Friday, April 14, 1978-Page 13 WINGS MOVE TO SECOND ROUND, 3-2 Lochea By BRIAN MILLER Special to The Daily UTOPIA (DETROIT)-The Detroit Red Wings' incredible turn-around from the worst team in hockey last year to a playoff participant this year is not yet over. Bill Lochead's second goal of the game coming with less than two minutes to play in the third period lifted the Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Flames at Olympia last nighat. Ead putk Lochead's goal sent the record crowd of 16,671 into mass hysteria as the fans realized the Red Wings' amazing season will continue. By wining, the Wings advance to the next playoff round as they swept two' straight games in the best-of-three series against the Flames. On Tuesday1 night, the Red Wings had upended Atlanta 5-3. Both teams played cautious, close- checking hockey in the first period. Neither team relished the idea of falling out behind in this crucial contes teams were looking for a mista the opposition. Each team took turns apply pressure, first Atlanta thenl although there were very fe scoring opportunities. There we good shots, some hard shots, like, but Detroit's goalie Rutherford and Atlanta's goa Bouchard handled all of the ease. The Flames again tried to on Flames st. Both Wings as they did Tuesday night in ke from Atlanta, but the Wings would not go for that. Atlanta took the only two penalties ying the of the period, but the Wings never Detroit, really threatened. The first stanza en- w good ded with no score. 're some The second period was up and down and the action right from the opening faceoff. Jimmy Both teams' play improved yet the lie Dan game's first goal, by Atlanta, came as m with the result of a little bad luck. With a loose puck in front of Ruther- thit th ford, Wings' defenseman Thommie Bergman attempted to clear it away. The puck came right to an Atlanta player, but Bergman blocked his shot. Unfortunately for the Wings the puck stayed right at Bergman's feet, where Atlanta's Tom Lysiak picked it up and fired it on goal. Rutherford got a piece of it but it still slid into the net. Paul Woods intercepted a pass and left a nifty drop pass for Vaclav -Nedomansky. Nedomansky's first shot went wide, but he chased down the puck and scored when no Atlanta defen- seman came over to check him. Detroit took a brief lead on Lochead's first goal after skating down the ice and faking out Bouchard midway through the third period. Atlanta's Bobby Lalonde scored a breakaway goal with less than six minutes left to set up Lochead's final heroics. The game winner came on a play similar to Lochead's previous tally. At this point, the rabid Wings fans let out with thunderous applause that didn't die down until well after the ;.~::y:.~.4~ game had ended.
