The parallel bar specialist, who's best high school effort earned him but 4th in the Illinois state championships, captured Striders start fast; Stickmen stick 'em This past weekend saw the men's and women's track teams participate in their first meets of the outdoor season. While part of the men's team was in Austin,' Texas competing in the Texas Relays, the rest was in Athens, Ohio at the Ohio University Relays. The distance medley crew placed fourth at Texas with a time of 9:39.3, shattering a school record by four seconds. Michigan pulled a third in the 400 meter relay with a time of 40.24, qualifying them for the national champion- ships. In pole vaulting, Jim Stokes placed second with a height of 16-6. The striders also had some outstanding performances at the Ohio Relays where they had five first-place finishes. The sprint medley placed first with a time of 3:24.6 as Greg Thomas shone individually with a contribution of 1:51.8 in his half mile leg. The tracksters were able to earn a second place in the distance medley with a time of 10:02.8. Meanwhile the women, even without injured star sprinter Pam Moore, managed to pull a fourth place out of seven teams at the Illinois Invitational at Champaign. Janet Hallfritsch and Abby Currier placed first and second in the * discus. Currier also got fifth in the javelin. Darlynda Key copped third places in the long jump and the 200 meters. The men travel down to Knoxville to participate in the Dogwood Relays on April 15 as the women take part in the Bowling Green Invitational on April 15-16. -ELISA FRYE Stickmen star Michigan's lacrosse club swept a couple games last weekend, first trouncing the Madison Wisconsin club 20-8 under poor playing conditions, and then moving on to beat the Chicago club (Midwest Club Lacrosse Association City Division champs) by a count of 15-11. "We really needed that game Sunday," said Coach Bob DiGiovanni. "Except for excessive fouling and man-down defense (Chicago scored 8 goals on Michigan penalties) I think it was the best team effort we made all year." Di Giovanni cited one play especially that broke a 9-9 tie with only ten seconds left in the third quarter against Chicago. Wolverines Dana Friend, Bobby Gordon, Chris Phillips, and Rick Bays moved the ball downfield in rapid succession before Bays slammed home a hard shot that put Michigan ahead to stay. "You sometimes wait all year for a play where the ball is handled like that and we had about three Sunday," Di Giovanni said, praising all four players for their fine performances. The Wolverines travel to Bowling Green Wednesday for only their fourth contest with a varsity team. -TOM STEPHENS the NCAA parallel bar championship last weekend at the University of Oregon. "John did a fabulous job under tremendous competitive pressure in performing his winning routine and scoring his career high of 9.7," said Michigan gymnastics coach Newt Loken. CORRITORE HAD his work cut out for him when Long Beach State's Yoichi Tomita scored a 9.65 in the finals. Corritore and Tomita were tied for first place going into the finals. "John knew he had to have a 9.7, and by God he did it!" exclaimed Loken. "He (Corritore) achieved his goal set a year ago when he missed the (NCAA) gold medal by one-tenth of a point," ad- ded Loken. "It was a super performan- ce." Corritore's teammate, Carl Badger, also made it to the finals where his score of 9.45 in vaulting earned him six- th place. "He (Badger) impressed a lot of people with his great technique, height and distance in vaulting," con- mented Loken. OKLAHOMA WON the NCAA team title with a score of 439.350. Arizona State and Southern Connecticut placed second and third respectively, with scores of 437.075 and 439.675. Portions of the meet will be telecast on ABC Wide World of Sports on April 30.
