A death

I T'S DIFFICULT to believe that
nothing has been written in this
paper about the death of Melvina
Reynolds. A folksinger with a political
conscience and a feminist before her
time, Reynolds, in her mid-70s, passed
away two weeks ago. I, for one, am
deeply grieved.
Reynolds, who didn't start writing
until she was fifty years old, was best
known for her song "Little Boxes,"
which has been recorded by such
folksinging greats as Pete Seeger and
Victor Jara.
Some of her tunes, like "We Don't
Need the Men," are said to have been
made up on the spur of the moment in
front of an audience:

Why is it that a-woman like this could
leave unnoticed? Perhaps it is a sign of
the alleged "growing apathy" of the
seventies, or perhaps it is because
Reynolds was involved in a struggle;
she used her songs to enlighten and
educate, not just to make a buck.

Their meeting and their romance is a lovely modern fairy tale set aglow by
some sharp, fresh jabs at motherhood, the military, psychiatry, and com-
puter dating. Music by Cat Stevens. A cult film that people see five or six
times. RUTH GORDON, BUD CORT, VIVIAN PICKLES.
WHERE'A POPPA?
(Carl Reiner, 1970) 8:40 only-MLB 3
Two brothers (GEORGE SEGAL and RON LEIBMAN) promise their dying
father they won't put their mother (RUTH GORDON) into an old age home
and become stuck with this senile psychopath. A marvelous satire on mother
love, exhilaratingly directed by Reiner, and a beautiful comic performance by
Segal, "the best light comedian in American movies."-Pauline Kael.

The aMaizin' Blues is a student singing/dancing ensemble performing popular music, show
tunes, vocal jazz standards and traditional Michigan favorites. Shows are fully choreo-
graphed and have been staged in Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, Cleveland; Columbus,
Chicago, as well as all over Michigan. In addition, the group went to the 1978-Rose Bowl
where they performed at Disneyland and the Hollywood Palladium.
