The Michigan Daily-Friday, April 7, 1978-Page 7 A death By WENDY GOODMAN I T'S DIFFICULT to believe that nothing has been written in this paper about the death of Melvina Reynolds. A folksinger with a political conscience and a feminist before her time, Reynolds, in her mid-70s, passed away two weeks ago. I, for one, am deeply grieved. Reynolds, who didn't start writing until she was fifty years old, was best known for her song "Little Boxes," which has been recorded by such folksinging greats as Pete Seeger and Victor Jara. Some of her tunes, like "We Don't Need the Men," are said to have been made up on the spur of the moment in front of an audience: ", e and niedt II, lot-I'n . 0g. toI6ilnuard in 1i1nnjhnve . Why is it that a-woman like this could leave unnoticed? Perhaps it is a sign of the alleged "growing apathy" of the seventies, or perhaps it is because Reynolds was involved in a struggle; she used her songs to enlighten and educate, not just to make a buck.
