The Ni kolais
Dance Theatre:
Media montage

It was a totally new experience in theater for me. Last week I
went to the Power Center expecting to photograph a dance troupe,
but was confronted instead with an incredibly colorful multimedia
show.
Alwin Nikolais is the originator of this unconventional dance
performance. He choreographs the dance, scores the electronic
music, designs the costumes and programs the ever changing
light show. He has created his own medium of expression.
In the theater nearly all his life, Nikolais blends the show-
manship and humor of the Broadway musical into his work. He
cites "primitive dance" as another influencing factor in his style.
When I suggested that he must have a great imagination, he
replied, "Everyone does-most people just don't use it"
