The 21-year-old Debol, who holds Michigan's all- time scoring records in points, goals and assists, yesterday signed a three-year contract with the Cincinnati Stingers of the WHA. Debol practiced with the Stingers in Cincinnati yesterday and was scheduled to play with the club tonight against the New England Whalers. THE EDUCATION MAJOR from St. Clair Shores will drop out of school for the time being. Cincinnati acquired the rights to Debol in Decem- ber, sending all-star center Dennis Sobchuk to the Edmonton Oilers. New England originally drafted him in 1976, as did the NHL's Chicago Black Hawks, but Debol said the Black Hawks showed little in- terest in him. "Cincinnati came down and showed a lot of in- terest in me," said the Notre Dame High School graduate. "After the trade with Edmonton I figured, 'Heck, nobody wants me.' But Cincinnati showed a lot of interest, and I figured it would be nice to play where they want you." STINGERS' EXECUTIVE vice-president Bill DeWitt Jr. praised the 5-11 center, who scored 20 goals this season. "We rated him the No. 1 college player this year, and for the last couple of years," Dewitt said. "But we have three strong centers, and it will not be easy to break into our lineup." The Stingers are currently in sixth place, in the eight team WHA, fighting for a playoff spot. Debol admitted that he was quite nervous about his pro debut. "I planned to come to town tomorrow, but my agent called me last night and said to get ready. I couldn't sleep last night,''said Debol. DEBOL, WHO JOINED the Wolverines as a freshman walk-on, }von national acclaim last year when he finished second in the nation in scoring with 99 points and led the Wolverines into the NCAA finals. He was called by many going into this season "the most exciting player in college hockey." His career totals of 112 goals, 132 assists and 246 total points are each Michigan all-time records. Debol was also Michigan's Rookie of the Year in 1975, made All-American in 1977 and has played on the U.S. National Team. 8p.m.- March CCIZ13 q0 8 a.m. 18 ecreational sports GRAND i OPENING ' w SALE MONDAY, MARCH 20 AT OUR NEW STORE IN ANN ARBOR d Open at a 211 S. Vida c alt to Giants for six unknowns,'$ ' Puckih9 by GARY KICINSKI SOMEWHERE, SOMEHOW, for some reason, somebody decided that it just wasn't going to be the year for Michigan hockey. In the Beginning, Destiny teased the Wolverines, ranking them Numero 1Jno in the land and blessing them with a 9-3 record after the first few weeks. But, while at the peak of their game, Destiny kicked the dirt out from under the Wolverine skates, causing a landslide and sending Michigan tumbling steadily downhill, like so many Jacks and Jills. For the remainder of the season the Wolverines went 3-17, and even though their play improved measurably in the last four weeks, they had lost too much ground in the WCHA race. Even when they were playing well, the Wolverines just couldn't get the puck in the net. It seemedlike nothing Coach Dan Farrell would do-line changes, benchings, goalie shufflings-would produce any different results. And so it was without remorse that Michigan viewed its first non-playoff season in the Farrell era, the first year without post-season competition sin- ce 1972-73 when Al Renfrew wrapped up 16 years of coaching. Coach Farrell can now enjoy the luxury afforded only to coaches on 9th and 10th place teams-an early start on recruiting. Unfortunately, no matter who Farrell comes up with, next year's icers don't promise to be much bet- ter. Only two proven scorers return in Mark Miller and Dan Lerg, and questions abound in both defense and goal. Next year's team will be loaded with youth and inexperience. They may finish higher than this year's team, but only because the current icers hardly came near to playing to their full capabilities. The 1977-78 campaign wasn't a total bomb, however. Several exciting plays, humorous incidents and unusual occurrences took place which will long be remembered by Michigan fans. For example: " Dave Debol faking a shot, dropping a defenseman and then slipping a behind-the-back pass to Doug Todd, who blasted the puck home immediately in Michigan's 6-4 win over Michigan State early in the year. " A pair of incredible passes from John Waymann and Dean Turner resulting in breakaway goals for Ben Kawa and Dan Lerg in the 11-3 stom- ping of Wisconsin. " ANN ARBOR NEWS reporter Neil Koepke coring out of the 1Vichigan lockerroom completely drenched after being thrown into the showers following the last game. " Goaltender Rick Palmer clearing the puck right into Dana Decker's stomach, giving Decker an easy goal in the 4-3 Michigan Tech loss. " Michigan State scoring a goal while most of the players were standing still, thanks to a whistle in the crowd from a Spartan fan. * John Waymann dragging along Spartan Tim McDonald on the ice, oblivious to the fact that McDonald' skate was caught in Waymann's shirt. * An all-out brawl that the players staged during practice one day during the losing streak, prompting Mark Miller to joke while reading an imaginary DAILY headline, "I can see it now-Icers practice ends in all-out brawl." I could go on, but you get the idea. While they weren't winning the Michigan hockey team still had an interesting season-full of a lot of downs, but a few ups; full of a lot of disappointments, but still a'few exciting memories." With Michigan out of tournament contention the WCHA will be sending defending NCAA champion Wisconsin and darkhorse Colorado College to the NCAA tournament this year, thanks to the Badgers' second-round victories over Michigan Tech and CC's stunning upset of first-place Denver. Colorado College, which placed 5th in the conference with a 13-19 record, will play CCHA champ Bowling Green in a first-round NCAA game to'see which team joins the Badgers and the two eastern teams for the finalfour at Providence. The Pirates also gained another live arm, signing free agent Jim Bibby to give Pittsburgh its best starting staff in a long time. With two strikes on him, Oakland owner Charles O. Finley may finally have put together a deal involving Blue that satisfies baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn. APPARENTLY looking for quantity before quality, Finley landed outfielder Gary Thomasson, pitchers Dave Heaverlo, Alan Wirth and John Johnson catcher Gary Alexander and minor league pitcher Phil Huffman. Kuhn, in a statement released by his office, indicated that this Blue deal was a winner. "Weare reviewing the details of the deal," Kuhn said. "However, it appears to be in order. In yesterday's final deal the Cleveland Indians swapped designated hitter Rico Carty for Toronto Blue Jay pitcher Dennis DeBarr. The 37-year-old Carty became expendable earlier this spring when the Tribe acquired DH slugger Willie Horton. STOP SMOKING 'IN FIVE DAYS.
