The Michigan Daily-Thursday, March 16, 1978-Page 5 MSA offers students property i By MARK PARRENT Personal property insurance is now ~available to students under a program 'sponsored by the Michigan Student Assembly. Annual premiums for the service are either $30 or $40, depending on the amount of coverage desired. The program is a self-insurance plan, nmeaning no company actually under- writes the plan. Claims will be paid out of a special account for the premiums. $PPLICATIONS DETAILING provi- sions of the plan are available in the .MSA offices, 3909 Michigan Union. The plan is ac'r nistered by G-M Un- derwriters, Troy firm specializing in : i'ol insurance programs. .G-M will receive 30 per cent of the 4premiums for its service. G-M also handles the MSA health insurance pro- gram which has been available for. some time. ยข Any University student is eligible for coyerage under the program, which provides $1,500 coverage for a $30 an- nual premium, or $2,000 coverage for a $40 annual fee. Neither plan covers the first $25 of any claim. MOST PERSONAL property - in- cluding stereo equipment, calculators, clothing, and television sets is covered. The property is covered against such risks as theft, fire and vandalism. Stereo equipment and television set claims are limited to 20 per cent of the total plan coverage desired. Student property insurance has not been available since the fall term of 1976. MSA had offered property in- surance, but the underwriter, Woodland Mutual Insurance Co. of Grand Rapids, went bankrupt and took the insurance funds down with it, said insurance committee chairman Phil Merdinger. All claims were paid, howe ever, he added. G-M Underwriters paid claims for the duration of the policy even though they were under no obligation to do so, Merdinger said. nsurance. UNDER THE NEW plan, all student contributions to the plan will be placed in a special account controlled by the Student Board of Trustees which will oversee the operation of the program, although day-to-day matters will be handled by G-M. G-M will also in- vestigate any claims, Merdinger said. After the 30 per cent G-M commission is subtracted, legitimate claims would be paid in full unless claims exceeded 75 per cent of the funds in the special account. In that case, payment of claims would be frozen until expiration of the contract, at which time payments of claims would be pro-rated. Merdinger stressed that such an abundance of claims would be "highly unlikely," based on past experience. "IT IS IMPOSSIBLE to buy property insurance on the open market around here," Merdinger remarked, unless other policies such as health or auto coverage are also purchased. Merdinger said other universities might adopt the MSA Plan sometime in the future, rather than establishing their own programs.
