The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, March 14, 1978-Page 9 Pierce to run for State Senate (Continued from Page 1) PIERCE, 47, lost his 1976 Congressional bid to Rep. Carl Pursell by a mere 344 votes out of more than the 190,000 votes cast. He lost his 1974 Democratic primary race for the same seat by 131 votes. With his campaign experience and large appeal, Pierce contends he has a good starting block since 70 per cent of the 14th Congressional constituency lies within the state Senatorial district. WITH HIS ANNOUNCED candidacy, Pierce joins Democratic Ypsilanti Mayor George Goodman as the only announced candidates in the senatorial race. Goodman declared his candidacy shortly after Sen. Bursley announced his retirement last month. Ann Arbor Rep. Perry Bullard has been one of the frequently mentioned names as another possible candidate. Bullard says he remains uncertain of his political plans, but Pierce's can- didacy makes his decision more "com- plex." Bullard is expected to make a firm decision within another week. At the same time, Pierce said Bullard's candidacy would "complicate things" as far as the primary and the strength of the Democratic party in the general election are concerned. "PRIMARIES ARE ALWAYS dif- ficult," Pierce said, "because in the end everyone has to work together. "I'm looking forward to tackling the issues," Pierce added, "and a very clean primary." Currently there are no Republicans officially in the Senatorial race, although several key GOP names have been mentioned including City Council- member Ronald Trowbridge and Coun- ty Commissioner Kathleen Fojtik. MSA eleection eertifie d By MARK PARRENT The Central Student Judiciary (CSJ) last night certified the results of last month's Michigan Student Assembly special election. The two questions on the ballot were passed by students in a special campus- wide election February 22 and will become amendments to the All-Campus Constitution in 44 days. THE FIRST-amendment will change the composition of the Assembly. Students of each school and college will elect representatives based on the enrollment of the particular school or college. MSA is now composed of a combination of 18 at-large represen- tatives and 17 representatives appoin- ted by school and college governments. Also included in the amendment is a provision to hold MSA elections only once a year rather than the present biannual elections. The second amendment calls for the MSA president to be elected directly by students rather than by MSA itself. In other action last night, CSJ elected Thomas Potter chief justice, Ric Shanin vice chief justice and Audrey Sullivan corresponding secretary.
