BAXTER'S 33 PACES ATTACK: The Michigan Daily-Friday, February 24, 1978-Page 9 Lady tumblers place Blue barrage bangs Illini By ERNIE DUNBAR There's ne question about it now. Dave Baxter's scoring slump is over. Anyone looking for a way to pull out of a season-long shooting drought should have been at Crisler Arena last night as Baxter hit a career high 33 points, including 11 of 13 in the second half to lead Michigan to a 107-96 victory over fourth place Illinois. BAXTER WASN'T the only Wolverine burning the nets though, as all of Michigan's starters hit for double figures and shot a combined 66.2 per- cent from the field. That figure represnts a Michigan team record and is the fifth highest in Big Ten history. The 78.9 percent shooting night for Baxter had the senior co-captain satisfied. "I never lost confidence in my shooting," Baxter said. "I just haven't been getting the shots I've been comfor- table taking prior to this game. "I DIDN'T have anything to lose. I was just going to gamble and put the pressure on myself," said Baxter, who established a new Michigan assist record last night. He finished with 10 assists for the evening, breaking assistant coach Dai Fife's record of 1i39 with his current mark of 146. "I have too many scorers on this team not to get the record," Baxter said. Red Wings bottle Caps By KEVIN ROSEBOROUGH Special to The Daily DETROIT - Though the win came quite a bit harder than expected, the Red Wings pulled themselves together to ice the Washington Capitals 4-1 at Olympia last night. The game, kept close by some spec- tacular goaltending by Jimmy Ruther- ford and Bernie Wolfe, wasn't decided until the third period. Ahead 2-1 on goals. by Dennis Polonich and Dale McCourt (his 23rd of the season) the Wings broke away with scores by Paul Woods and another by Polonich. The win pulled Detroit within a point of third place Pittsburgh in the Norris division. The Wings now trail the second place Los Angeles Kings by only four points. While Baxter put on his offensive show, center Joel Thompson was busy hitting 9 of 11 (7-7 in the first half) from the field en route to notching 19 points. Forwards Alan Hardy and Mike McGee chipped in with 12 apiece, while Tom Staton hit 15. "WE CAME ON strong the last 10 to 12 minutes of the game," Michigan coach Johnny Orr said. "Illinois was strong inside and we had trouble defen- ding them. I was happy we didn't give up.'' In assessing Baxter's play at guard, Orr felt that the Detroit native played with a bit more confidence than in his previous outings. "HE WAS MORE relaxed and loose," Orr said. "That's a funny thing. He played like that in the beginning of the year and then he started worrying about what everyone else was doing." In countering Illinois coach Lou Hen- son's offensive strategy, Orr utilized both 1-2-1-1 and 2-2-1 zone presses. Bax to basics the Illini's chances the most came at the 5:48 mark of the second half when forward Neil Bresnahan fouled out. Immediately following his departure, the Wolverines reeled off eight straight points to put the game on ice after playing a back and forth contest much of the way. "When Bresnahan went out with fouls it hurt us a lot," said Illinois' Henson. "We didn't handle the ball like we'd been handling it after he went out." WHILE BAXTER was wowing the announced crowd of 13,589 with his of- fensive performance, Illinois Mark Smith was tossing in 32 points of his own. Bresnahan tallied 14. Michigan wasn't the only one with the hot shooting hand, as the Illini his 54.2 percent from the floor. Trying to analyze how Baxter had hurt his team, Henson summed up his squad's losing effort saying, "It was just one of those nights. Most of those shots were tough shots. We had a hand up most of the time and his shots still went in. It was just a great night." With the victory, Michigan moves to 9-6 in the Big Ten, while Illinois falls to 6-9. Isecond i n By JEFF FRANK Special to The Daily MT. PLEASANT - But for the presence of the always unpredictable balance beam and Michigan State, it might have been the best meet in Michigan history. Michigan's women tumblers blazed excellent scores in three of the four gymnastics events and placed second behind Michigan State in last night's SMAIAW state champion- ship meet. A balanced team effort led the way to the women's 129.6 score, and although it was the team's second highest in history, it just wasn't enough to dis- lodge MSU from its perennial position at the top of Michigan's gymnastics heap. The Spartans used a tremendous team uneven bars score of 35.55 plus three events by Pam Steckroat to ac- cumulate their total of 137.95. sophomore Sara Flom captured second places in vaulting and floor exercise with matching scores of 8.75 to finish behind Steckroat in both events. Flom also added a fifth place tie in the all-around and a fifth place in the uneven bars to complete her evening's work. Co-captain Ginger Robey was the only other tumbler to break into the top five in any event as she grabbed fifth place in vaulting and floor exercise. The teamhad hoped for a score of 130 or better, but after hitting some of their top scores of the year in vaulting and uneven bars it seemed possible to crack the team record of 133.75. state meetI However, a poor beam performance had not been forseen. Repeated falls along with shakiness on the beam proved enough to undo any hopes of breaking the record or upsetting the powerful Spartans. Michigan Coach Anne Cornell was pleased with the team's performance. "We got some really strong perfor- mances from people besides Sara (Flom) today," said Cornell. "I'm , really happy with the way we perfort- med but I'm just a little disappointed we fell short of 130." Some of the performers that were singled out by Cornell for outstandirg showings included freshperson Colloe Forrestel and Co-captains Suzy Stanto and Ginger Robey. Stanton and Robey each established personal highs tonight. Robey, with hete all-around-score of 32.65, and Stanton, scoring 8.45 for her half-on, half-bft vault which she attempted for the first time in competition. Michigan's Varsity Reserves answered the dilemma by clamping a tough defense on the Adrian College junior varisty last night in the second half and ran away with the contest, 87-70. With Mott Community College's Brian Rison looking to scorch-Crisler's nets Saturday, Miehigan coach Dan Fife wanted a strong defensive showing from his team. "WE PLAYED super defense in the second half," Fife beamed. "We were as good as we've been all season."* Thekey to the defense was the play against the point guard, a role handled well by Michigan's Bud Van De Wege. "Buddy did an excellent job oi} Adrian's number 20 (Phil Bova)," Fife said. "Buddy did turn the ball over a few times (thrice), but he put on good pressure. "ANYTIME YOU can pressure the point guard, it's hard for the offense to work." Fife should know, since he played point guard during his varsity years here. Bova pointed tosanother defensive nemesis, however. "I through a lob pass across the floor, and all of a sudden number 55 flew out of nowhere." Indeed, Chris Fielder sparkled. The 6-2 forward poured through a team-high 21 points along with six steals, half his team's total. FIELDER'S DEFENSIVE play lifted Michigan out of its first half doldrums. The team sharpened in the final twenty minutes forcing Adrian to 22 turnovers while swiping the ball twelve times. The Wolverines also shot 51% from the field in the second half (including Fielder's ten for 14 accuracy.
