Rocky (MLB 3, 7:00 and 9:15) This grime-to-limelight story of a boxer' (Sylvester Stallone), handed a one-in-a- million chance to fight an Al-like champ, has a few bright moments. ** / Events Hockey - U-M vs. Michigan Tech at Yost Ice Arena, 7:30 p.m. Music School - Symphony Band at Hill, 8 p.m. , sunday February 26 CINEMA Klute (Angell Aud A, 7:00 and 9:00) This Detective thriller about a New York prostitute (Jane Fonda), is a fas- cinating, at times memorable charac- ter study. ***1/2 John Ford Day (Old A&D, Directed by John Ford at 1:00, The Quiet Man at 3:00, Rising of the Moon at 7:00, and How Green Was My Valley at 9:00). m_-on-day February 27 CINEMA Tora-San: Love Under One Umbrella (Old A&D, 8:00 only, free showing) A 1976 Japanese film, typical of that coun- try's cinema in its depiction of minor, incidental occurences from everyday life. **1/z Kiss Me Deadly (Angell Aud A, 9:10 only, free showing) Directed by Robert Aldrich, whose most recent effort is The Choirboys, this is supposedly THE film noir classic. ***1/2 tuesday February 28 CINEMA The Hunchback'of Notre Dame (Old A&D, 7:00 and 9:00) x"I'll give you five pounds of coffee if this one doesn't have you in tears." - 0. Fretter **** La Salamandre (MLB 3, 7:00 and 9:15) A light, flaky, enjoyable film about a menage a trois and the fun escapades that come with it. *** Thundercrack! (Angell Aud A, 7:00 and 9:15) An X-rated feature from Curt McDowell and George Kuchar, the darlings of the 16mm film festival. Four men, three women and a gorilla are stranded in a Victorian mansion. What goes on is anybody's guess. Ann Arbor premiere. Events Music School - winners, grad and undergrad performance competitions at Hill, 8p.m. Independent Cinema Video Series - Joe Barnard, Detroit filmmaker, speaks at the Canterbury House, 8 p.m. wednesday March 1 The Gold Rush and The General (Old A&D; The Gold Rush at 7:00 and 10:00, The General at 8:30) Arguably the two greatest screen comedies ever made. Chaplin's film, in addition to classic sequences such as that in which he eats his shoe, has some of the most affecting pathos ever filmed. Buster Keaton's The General is a logistic wonder (most of it was filmed with Keaton scam- pering about aspeeding train), and has countless comic gems. Not bad for an evening's entertainment. **** The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Searchers (Angell Aud A, 7:00 and 9:00, respectively) Probably John Ford's two greatest films. GO. **** thursday. March 2 King Kong (Old A&D, 7:00 and 9:05) This is it: the one and only original un- censored version that you've probably never seen because it never comes around here. Starring Fay Wray and Kong.** Providence (Angell Aud A; 7:00 and 9:30) The most recent film by Alain Resnais (Hiroshima Mon Amour). The film stars Ellen Burstyn and Dirk Bogarde, and is reportedly "a dazzling probe into the creative imagination of a dying writer." Susan Sontag liked it. Niterie-,S1 Second Chance - Masquerade plays rock from the Top 40 charts, the Beach Boys and Bowie this weekend. Two local groups, Cyprus and Southwind play more rock on Sunday and Monday, respectively: Then Tuesday through next weekend, a P-Funk type band called Roger and The Human Body discos down. Roadhouse - Three Ring Circus, the Ringling Bros. with Les Pauls and Mar- shall stacks, play rock and roll this weekend. Blind, Pig - R&B influenced music is the staple of the Silvertones. These Blind Pig recording artists play through Saturday. On Monday, club regular Boogie Woogie Red plays the blues. Mr. Flood's -' The Tucker Blues Band plays those drivin' Chicago blues this weekend. The twin folk duo known as Gemini will sing and strum on Tuesday. The Ark - Marshall Dodge, Eastern United States humorist and storyteller, entertains this weekend. Sud's Factory - This warehouse- cum-disco features rock and roll on Wednesdays. This week, the well- known and popular group Salem Witch- craft performs.
