Griffin nixes retirement; bids for third term
(Continued from Pagel) Prosecutor L Brooks Patterson Pat-

£

ds on important decisions..
"WHEN A PERSON changes his
mind," Marge Griffin added, "it's a
long process. You don't change your
mind overnight."
Following Griffin's announcement,
charges that he had made a forced
decision were unleashed by another
Senatorial candidate, Oakland County

a uo LAV ". " UP r LVOl. X t
terson-said yesterday in a news con-
ference that Griffin decided not to run
only as late as this weekend soon after a
luncheon date with Gov. William
Milliken. Patterson vowed to stay in the
race and may dwell on Griffin's "in-
decisiveness" as a campaign issue.
"A lot of people made plans on his ten
months of denials that he would run,"

Our most popular film. A Scottish soldier during WW I is sent to a French
town, evacuated except for ar asylum. Meanwhile the fleeing Germans have
left a time bomb. The asylum inmates escape, taking up various costumes
and roles. A very funny comedy and a powerful anti-war film-the sanity
of insanity and vice-versa. ALAN BATES, GENEVIEVE BUJOLD. "Delightfully
subtle satire-penetrating comedy encased in a most beautiful film."-Judith

Patterson said. "A lot of people have
been really hurt by this."
PATTERSON, who entered the race
only Friday, said Griffin was pushed in-
to the race as a ploy to -stop the
prosecutor's candidacy and charged
that a power conspiracy was taking
place in the Republican party.
Congressman Phil Ruppe who was
urged into the Senate race by Griffin, is
expected to announce tomorrow his in-
tentions to stay in the race.
"He's been laying the campaign
ground work for the last eight weeks at
the suggestion of Sen. Griffin," said
Jim Storey, a Ruppe spokesman. "I
don't think he's ready to hang it up."
GRIFFIN SAID he spoke to Ruppe
yesterday and the northern state
lawmaker seemed to be "disappoin-
ted."
"We had a very cordial conver-
sation," Griffin said. "I hope Phil will
reconsider and run for the House seat.
"I'm sorry the plans of others have
been disrupted," he added.
THROUGHOUT the press conference
Griffin was repeatedly questioned
about why he changed his mind about
seeking re-election.
At one point, Griffin became defen-

sive when asked why he had
misrepresented his candidacy inten-
tions.
"If you're attacking my integrity,"
Griffin told the reporter. "I resent
that."
THE PRESS CONFERENCE came
to an abrupt ending after a news repor-
ter asked the senator if he felt he "stab-
bed his friend (Ruppe) Griffin's cam-
paign manager quickly intervened,
thanking the reporters for their atten-
dance.
Later, Griffin expressed his pleasure
about the Milliken-(James) Brickley-
Griffin ticket on this fall's ballot.
"I think we have a strong Republican
party," Griffin said. "I hope no one will
disrupt the Republican's strong chan-
ces."
ALTHOUGH rumors circulating in
the state capital say Patterson may be
in line for the Attorney General
position, Lt. Gov. James Damman is
not so lucky.
Damman withdrew Iis candidacy
from the Senate race yesterday. His
chances to stay on in Lansing were
eliminated last Friday when he was
replaced on the ticket by Eastern
Michigan University President James

Brickley.
"In many ways this was not an easy
decision for me," Damman said
yesterday. "Very important in 'my
deliberations was the question of my
responsibility to the many people who
have so enthusiastically supported my
candidacy."
DAMMAN'S POLITICAL future
remains unclear.
It is expected that a fall-out of can-
didates will occur on both sides of the
political fence in the upcoming weeks.
STUDIES
SKID ROW
GLASSBORO, N.J. (AP) - Steve
Lipski is a college student by day and
a bum by night.
Lipski, 22, a communications sen-
ior at Glassboro State College, roams
Philadelphia's skid rows every night
on a personal project to find out
about derelicts.
Lipski tries to be authentic. He
wears the dirtiest, oldest clothes he
can find. He is unshaven and carries
a bottle of port wine diluted with
water.

Since none of the Democrats has held G
statewide office before, most did not
announce their candidacy until after'
Griffin said he would not seek re
election. Many of them would not have
joined the race had Griffin remained a
candidate from the outset.
Democratic contender Rep. Anthony
Derenzenski (Muskegon) said Griffin's
decision to run will not put him out of
the race and added that Griffin may
become a liability to the Republican n
because of his indecisiveness.
"It's going to hurt them," said'
Derenzenski. "It leaves a very bad
taste in people's mouth."

Day are obscure, but trace back to
three legends:
" Shortly before his execution, St
Valentine sent a note to the kindly,,
daughter of his prisonmaster and.
signed it "from your Valentine."
" On the eve of an ancient Roman
festival, boys and girls chose part-
ners by lots, under the blessing of
gods Juno Februata.
" Feb. 14 is traditionally the first
day that birds mate.
THOUGH SOME lovers may be:
satisfied with a $47.50, seven-pound,,:
box of candy from Drake's, some,
have had more expensive tastes.
According to The Book of Lists, "Dia
mond Jim' Brady gave a gold-plated
bicycle to actress Lillian Russell one
Valentine's Day in the early 1900s.
The spokes and handlebars were
covered with chips of diamonds,
sapphire, rubies and emeralds.
Some famous lovers didn't wait for
the yearly event. Cleopatra once
plopped two. priceless pearls in her
glass of wine and. drank them to
prove her love for Mark Antony. And
Joe DiMaggio has sent fresh red
roses to the grave of Marilyn Monroe
three times a week since her death in
1962.
FOR LOCAL lovebirds, Valentine's
Day means sentimentality. Senior
Ann Mulhern met Steve Olson at a
Valentine's Day party in Bursley
three years ago, and they've been
dating ever since.
"We always celebrate our anniver-
sary. We'll probably go out to dinner
'this weekend," Mulhern said.
Dave Wiese and Katy Lupton were
high school sweethearts. A trip to
Florida last spring break clinched
their marriage plans. The wedding is
set for August in Royal Oak. But they
have no special plans for Valentine's
Day, "that I know of," said Lupton.
