Page 8-Sunday, February 12, 1978-The Michigan Daily LOSE 13th OF LAST 14: Icers drop By BOB MILLER Special to The Daily DULUTH-Michigan's slump in hockey is now "the slump" with a capital 'T.' Minnesota-Duluth saw to that last rlight with a six to one victory over the icers for a sweep of the two game series after an eight to seven overtime trium- ph on Friday. WOLVERINE GOALIE Frank Zim- merman did all he good to keep the Blue in the game, but in the end Michigan dropped its tenth straight WCHA road contest. Duluth took a 1-0 lead into the dress- ing room after the first period. Curt Giles powered home a slap shot on the power play to give the Bulldogs the ad- Vaitage. It was Giles' fourth goal in the weekend series. tZimmerman was the star of the period as he stopped 20 Duluth shots, rmany of them while sprawled on the ice: There were times during the period PLANT'S GALORE 1202 Packard (at wells) Ann Arbor VALEN1TINE SPECIAL All Plants in Bloom 150/0 Off! Purdue shocked COLUMBUS-Kelvin Ransey led a spurt of 17 unanswered Ohio State points last night as the Buckeyes up- set Purdue 91-77 in Big Ten basket- ball. The loss dropped the Boiler- makers to 8-4 and into third place in the conference behind Michigan State and Minnesota.-AP WHILE THE WOLVERINE netmin- der did all he could to keep UMD off the scoreboard, his teammates were having no luck getting on the board. Michigan took 11 shots on the Bulldogs Rich Heinz, most of them nother strong shots in close, however, the, Wolverines could not beat Heinz. For the second straight evening Michigan didn't look like a team harrassed by a slump after the first 20 minutes. But as was the case Friday night the Wolverines somehow managed to louse up a number of scoring opportunities, which would have changed the complexion of the game completely. INSTEAD OF owning a large lead, Michigan had to play catch-up hockey. The crowd warmed up to the free- wheeling affair as the second period was mostly up and down action with few whistles. UMD kept peppering Zimmerman with blistering shots which kept the fans enthralled throughout the period. Duluth's Stan Palmer scored his second unofficial goal in two nights midway though the period. Zimmer- man was out of the crease after stop- ping one Bulldog shot, but Palmer picked up the loose puck and sent it towards Michigan's open net. TIM MANNING stepped in front of the shot at the last moment preventing the goal, but the red light went on anyway. However, the referee overruled the goal judge saying the puck never went over the red line. Two shorthanded goals on the same penalty by John Harrington, in the thrid period salted the game away for Duluth. The icers are now in seventh place. Yesterday the Wolverines fell to the Spartans because the entire MSU squad outplayed Michigan for most of the game, sending the Spartans back to East Lansing with a 85-71 runaway. "Wegot outhustled today," head coach Dan Fife said. "When the ball's loose and they (MSU) have three guys going after it and we only have three pairs of eyes, you don't get many." It appeared that the Wolverines were going to avenge the earlier loss to MSU in the beginning of the contest, running out to a quick 12-4 lead. But a Spartan time out deflated Michigan's momen- tum and aided by two consecutive Blue turnovers, MSU fought back to take the lead at 14-12. The two teams traded baskets for the following 15-minute span until Spartan center Gerald Gilkie tipped in his own missed stuff on his fourth try to put MSU ahead to stay, 28-26. In the remaining first half ticks on the clock, the Spartans exploited their size in close as Gilkie and forward Mike Longaker, combined for ten straight points to make the rest of the game Blue uphill battle. Wolverine guard Ray Owens put together two 14-point halves to lead all scorers with 28. The only other Wolverine to reach double figures was forward Chris Fielder, who added six steals and nine rebounds to his ten poin- ts. Cold shooting hampered any Michigan comeback attempts as the Wolverines could only can 37 per cent of their field goal attempts for the game.
