The Michigan Daily-Friday, February 10, 1978-Page 5 For the Week of uuppen gS . . February 10 thru 16 AllWeek COMMERCIAL CINEMA Julia (Campus) Fred Zinneman's almost overly impeccable film, taken from a true story in which young playwright Lillian Hellman (Jane Fon- da) smuggles 50,000 dollars to her friend Julia (Vanessa Redgrave) to help subvert the Nazi cause. An in- teresting film, but somewhat ener- vated. *** The One and Only (State) Henry Winker stars as Andy Schmidt,an un- controllable show-off who takes up a career in "big-time wrestling." This Carl Reiner comedy has a few good laughs, but it's nothing to write.home about.*** High Anxiety (Michigan) Mel Brooks' Hitchcock send-up has more good gags than Silent Movie, but the whole idea of restaging some of Hitch- cock's most famous scenes seems fun- damentally lacking in any comedic value. Worth the three bucks, but "Springtime for Hitler" it ain'.t*** The Other Side of the Mountain, Pt. II (Fifth Forum) More sugary schmaltz - the girl's paralyzed, and so is the film's emotional force. * Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Fox Village) Steven SPielberg's alien tour de force is a grand, visually stun- ning spectacle that celebrates, the mysteries above as well as the looming vastness of the medium. **** The Betsy (Briarwood) A new film, taken from Harold Robbins' ultra- sleazy book about the bigwigs behind auto racing. Starring (believe it or not,' folks) Laurence Olivier. Saturday Night Fever (Briarwood) A fine performance by John Travolta, dynamite disco sequences, and some very, very nice BeeGees songs all over- come a cliche-hewn script and make this one of the year's most satisfying flicks. ***1/2 The Turning Point (Briarwood) A soft, mushy movie, but the exquisite ballet sequences make up for it. *** The Goodbye Girl (Briarwood) Neil Simon's most human and compelling script is refreshingly free of the stodginess that characterizes most of his others. Richard Dreyfuss steals the show. ***%/ " friday- February 10 CINEMA Dumbo (Old A&D, 7:00, 8:30 and 10:00) Disney's heart-wrenching animated classic is being shown along with a few Mickey Mouse cartoons and an excerpt from Fantasia. Duck Soup (Room 100, Hutchins Hall, 7:00 and 9:00) The only film the Marx Brothers ever made that is unmitigated insanity from start to finish. Groucho presides over the mythical kingdom of Freedonia; not exactly (as some claim) a parable for our time, but certainly one of the greatest screen comedies ever made. **** Is There Sex After Death? (MLB 4, 7:00 and 10:00) This porno-spoof stars the hilarious Buck Henry, and is repor- tedly quite funny. Marijuana: Weed With Roots in Hell (MLB 4, 8:30 only) An ultra-campy an- ti-marijuana film from the '30s, and much funnier than Reefer Madness. *** 2 Lust For Life (Angell Aud A, 7:00 and 9:15) Kirk Douglas portrays Vincent Van Gogh, in this entertaining but un- deniably Hollywood biography. Direc- ted by Vincent Minelli. *** The French Connection (Nat Sci Aud, 7:00 and 9:00) William Friedkin's best film is a bit soulless, but as well-made and gripping a thriller as you'll ever see.**** saturday February 11 CINEMA Gone With the Wind (Old A&D, 1:00 and 7:00) This film is both a depiction and apiece of American history. See it again. **** The Front (7:00, 8:40 and 10:20) Woody Allen's assured performance holds this film together, but it's less than daring in its evocation of the Mc- Carthy era. With Andrea Marcovicci. * Lonesome Cowboys and Flesh (Angell Aud A, 7:00 and 9:00, respec- tively) Warhol's super-stud Joe Dallasandro stars in both. Flesh is from the Paul Morrisey period, and boasts typically grainy camerawork and ex- cruciatingly bad acting. Lonesome Cowboys (made in '67) is a genuine Warhol article, and a wryly ironic (if sexually frank) experiment in cinema du wierd. At his worst, Warhol is a true original. Hello, Dolly! (Nat Sci Aud, 7:00 and 9:30) If you like Streisand, then this version of the legendary show should suit your fancy. With Walter Matthau. ***% sunday February 12 CINEMA Basic Training and Essene (Old A&D, 7:00 and 9:05, respectively) Two Fred Wiseman documentaries (be on the look-out for Wiseman in person next week). Basic Training is an expectantly critical look at the mindlessness of military training. Essene is lighter and more humorous, exploring the ins and outs of daily life at an Anglican monastary. ***1/2 Love and Death (Angell Aud A, 7:00, 8:45 and 10:00) Woody Allen's Duck SOup is set in 18th century Russia, has visual quotes from Bergman and Eisenstein films, and countless superb jokes every minute. Cannot be seen too many times. **** EVENTS Del Rio Bar - every Sunday night, 6- 9 p.m. jazz band. Free, no cover charge. 122 W. Washington. mnonday February 13 CINEMA Castle of Sand (Old A&D, 8:00 only, free showing) A Japanese film, direc- ted by Yoshitaro Mothra. The Big Heat (Angell Aud A, 9:10 only, free showing) Glenn Ford plays a 1950's Serpico in Fritz Lang's flawed but diabolically entertaining suspense drama. With Lee Marvin. ***1/2 tuesday' February 14 CINEMA High Noon (Old A&D, 7:00 and 9:05) TONIGHT GARGOYLE FILMS presents DUCK SOUP Plus: THE THREE STOOGES Shows at y &9a Room 100 Admission Hutchins Hall $1.00 (LowQuad) Long singled out for its virtuostic images and use of time, the action is exactly as long as the film, High Noon is a true American classic. **** King of Hearts (Angell Aud A, 7:00 and 9:00) Ignore the simple-minded political theme (the whole sane-insane bit), and you have a very funny, at times moving comedy. Directed by Phillipe de Broca. ***% 0 wednesday February 15 CINEMA Nanook of the North and Shadow Cat- cher (Old A&D,\8:00 and 9:05 respec tively, free showing) Two documen- taries, the first of which follows the noted Eskimo and is directed by the great Robert Flaharty. Murder My Sweet (Angell Aud A, 7:00 only) A continuation of the Raymond Chandler Festival. Strangers on a Train (Angell Aud A, 9:00 only) This superb Hitchcock thriller proceeds from an absolutely ingenious idea: Two men who intend murder meet on a train, and each agrees to murder the other's respective victim, to avoid any possibility of motive. The master was rarely better. ** The Grapes of Wrath (Nat Sci Aud, 7:00 and 9:00) John FOrd's legendary film, adapted from the Steinbeck novel. With Henry Fonda. **** thurs day,. February 16 CINEMAw, The Day the Earth Stood Still (Old A&D, 7:00 and 9:05) This science-fiction classic is a little sappy at times (aren't they all?), but thoroughly enjoyable. Directed by Robert Wise, who also did The Haunting.**.. The 400 Blows (Angell Aud A, 7:00; 8:40 and 10:20) Francois Truffaut's fir- st feature is also the first in his Antione' Doinel series, and stars a very young Jean-Pierrs Leaud. There are moments in this chronicle of childhood hardship as great as any on film. **g See MOVIES, Page 9 INTENVSIVE JOURNAL WEEKEND WORKSHOP as developed by DR.
