The Michigan Daily, Friday, February3, 1978Page 7 Happenings Events and Entertainment pp9s .for week of Feb.3-9 All Week COMMERCIAL CINEMA Pardon Mon Affaire (Campus) A fine French farce, made by the same guy responsible for the absolutely hysteri- cal Tall Blonde Man movies. Pardon Mon Affaire doesn't quite achieve the comis delirium of its predecessors, but is quite a funny film in its own right. The One and Only (State) Coming right on the profitable heels of Heroes, this is another in what promises to be an extended barrage of Hank Winkler flicks. But take heart, cynics: This one's directed by Carl Reiner and might just prove to have some redeem- able moments. High Anxiety (Michigan) Mel Brooks' most recent old movie pastiche is a send-up of the whole Hitchcock mode and has gotton some (though by' no means all) critical raves. Knowing Brooks, there should be at least a few gags worth the admission price. Semi-Tough (Fifth Forum) This film is to good comedy what fish sticks are to lobster tail. A mildly amusing satire that just never seems to go anyplace. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Fox Village) Steven Spielberg's op- timistic, wonderful, at times awesome chronicle of a visit from irresistibly cute extraterrestrial creatures who ride around in a spaceship the size of Ann Arbor. Makes Star Wars look like a TV movie. **** The Turning Point (Briarwood) Having arrived here about three mon- ths after opening (that's just fashion- ably late for Ann Arbor), The Turning Point reportedly has many fine dra- matic moments and some exquisite ballet sequences. With Anne Bancroft and Mikhail Baryshnikov, directed by Herbert Ross. Saturday Night Fever (Briarwood) Energetic direction, a surprisingly fine performance from Kotterite John Tra- volta, dynamite disco sequences and ,some very, very nice Bee Gees tunes all combine to make this one of the year's most entertaining. ***1/2 Kentucky Fried Movie (Briarwood) A long series of sketches on television, the movies and various other satirical targets. Sometimes dumb, sometimes offensive, sometimes quite funny. The Goodbye Girl (Briarwood) Neil Simon's script is his most human and compelling yet, refreshingly free of the stodginess and obsessive one-liners that charcaterize so many of his others. $ichard Dreyfuss steals the show. ***1/2 Fri day. February 3 CINEMA The Outlaw Josey Wales (Old A&D, 7:00 and 9:30) Clint Eastwood starred in and directed this typically mindless 'tale of the Civil War West. With Chief Dan George. ** Annie Hall (MLB 3, 7:00, 8:40 and 10:20) Woody Allen's latest flick pre sents the master humorist at the height of his comic and filmmaking powers. Diane Keaton was never more appeal- ing.** The Deep (Nat Sci Aud, 7:00 and 9:30) This pseudo-suspense thriller is a weak attempt to recapture the water-crazy Jaws audience. There's little of interest beyond some superbly-photographed underwater sequences, and it manages to be simultaneously sexist and racist. You might as well stay home and study. * Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Angell Aud A, 7:00 and 9:00) A thinly-disguised vehicle for exposing Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe to the public. Most notable for making Monroe a star. Howard Hawks directed. **12 Saturday February 4 CINEMA Annie Hall (MLB 3, 7:00, 8:40 and 10:20) See listing for Friday. Maitresse (Angell Aud A, 7:00 and 9:00) An Ann Arbor premiere from the director who brought you Idi Amin Dada. The sordid plot description on the Co-op sheet indicates high probability of dreksville, U.S.A. Fellini's Casanova (Old A&D, 7:00 and 9:45) Fellini's latest extravaganza is cold-blooded, visually chaotic, and the simplistic, highly unoriginal theme -- that love Casanova-style is sterile and unfulfilling - is driven home as if the whole thing were a great moralist lecture. In light of the greatness of I some of Fellini's other achievements, Casanova is a sorry spectacle. *% Planet of the Apes (Nat Sci Aud, 7:30 and 9:30) By far the best of the seem- ingly endless series of Ape epics, Planet of the Apes is an immensely funny and enjoyable saga, made from a complete- ly implausible'idea. Utterly ridiculous. ** *1/2 Sunday February 5 CINEMA Fantastic Planet (Angell Aud A, 7:00, 8:15 and 9:30) A brilliantly-animated tale, which relates a battle between the two races of the planet Ygam. **** High School and Hospital (Old A&D, 7:00 and 9:15, respectively, free show- ing) Two Fred Wiseman documen- taries, the first of which is justifiably Robert Altman. ***** Cousin, Cousine (Angell Aud A, 7:00, 8:40 and 10:20) This highly overrated story of farcical adulterous relation- ships is, nevertheless, an amusing and reasonably enjoyable film.** Thursday February 9 CINEMA Blow Up (Angell Aud A, 7:00 and 9:00) Michelangelo Antonioni tries to show us how the superficial, indulgent lives of the 60s children constitute some sort of "non-reality," as opposed to the "reality" of life's more traditional values. Even if one rejects this theme as convoluted crappola, Blow Up remains an absolute masterpiece of filmmaking, completely absorbing and utterly gorgeous to look at. With David Hemmings, Vanessa Redgrave and a cameo by the voloptuous Veruschka. sS Niteri es.
