L: SPOR TS OF THE DAIL Y: Big Ten schedule buried, almost Only one of the five scheduled Big Ten games was played Thursday night, and Illinois won its second road victory in four traveling dates, 70-61 at Iowa. The victory moved the Illini into fifth place with a 4-3 Big Ten record, and left Iowa in eighth place with 2-5. The illini will climb into a fourth place tie, or perhaps higher, depending on the outcome of the Indiana at Michigan and Minnesota at Purdue games. "Iowa just whipped us all over the floor in theirst half," Illini Coach Lou Henson said. "But our players just kept hanging in and we ended up pulling it out." "They took the game to us in the second half," Hawkeye Coach Lute Olson said. "We were shooting reasonably well and then they forced us, into some poor shots." The other three contests canceled Thursday will be played today, Min- nesota at Purdue in a scrap to see which team remains in second place, North- western at Wisconsin and league leading Michigan State at Ohio State. Because of the forced shift 'of the Thursday games to yesterday or today, all today's games were rescheduled for Monday, Purdue at Michigan, Wiscon- sin at Iowa, Michigan State at Indiana, Minnesota at Northwestern and Ohio State at Illinois. The 'schedule change also com- plicated the Big Ten's Saturday TV program. The Ohio State at Illinois game originally was scheduled for the tube, but with cancellation of the con- test, the conference was hoping to display the Minnesota at Purdue game. If the necessary technical equipment, based in Milwaukee, can't reach Pur- due, a Big Ten spokesman said, the Northwestern at Wisconsin game will be televised. Idaho no-no Moscow, Idaho-The NCAA has slap- ped the University of Idaho witha one- year probation for basketball recruitin g violations. University officials had no im- mediate comment, but were expected to release a statement later today. IDAHO, UNDER provisions of the probation, may, not appear on any NCAA controlled television games or be eligible for post-season competition un- til Jan. 17, 1979. The university was ordered to publicly reprimand basketball coach" Jim Jarvis and an assistant for the violations, which ranged from giving money and loaning cars to prospective athletes ;to erroneously signing statements that the university was in compliance with the NCAA regulations. THE NCAA ALSO said the assistant coach, identified by University President Richard Gibb as Wes Sodorff, will receive no salary increases during the probation. "The committee believes that the penalty imposed in this case is meaningful and appropriate in that it relates to the responsibility of the in- stitution for violations occurring in its athletic program," said Arthur R. Reynolds, chairman of the Infractions Committee. * * * Bobick fights cop JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-U.S.heavyweight Duane Bobick meets South African Policeman Kallie Knoetze in a scheduled 10-round fight tonight. Bobick, a native of Bowlus, Minn., now fighting out of Philadelphia, is the favorite. He is ranked the No. 5 heavyweight in the world and has won all of his 41 professional fights-except one-an embarrassing knockout by Ken Norton in less than a minute. Bobick is taller, has a longer reach, more experience and a slight weight advantage. Bobick is expected to weigh between 212 and 217 pounds and Knoet- ze 210. But Knoetze, a mustachioed policeman from Pretoria who holds the "white heavyweight champion" title in South Africa, will have 40,000 partisan fans rooting him on at Rand Stadium. And he has a lot less to lose. For Bobick, a solid victory is essen- tial for him to stay in the running for a shot at Muhammad Ali's title after the Norton fight. He says "it's just a matter of what round I knock him out tomorrow night." Knoetze, in contrast, could suffer a_ defeat and still have his standing enhanced if he puts on a good show. He is regarded as a slow starter who comes alive in later rounds and can dismantle an opponent with a devastating right . hook. * * * Ted tutors BOSTON-The New York Yankees are hoping to woo "the Splendid Splin- ter" Ted Williams, into a job as part- time batting coach, owner George Steinbrenner said Thursday. STEINBRENNER said Yankees' Vice President Al Rosen had talked to the former Red Sox slugging star about helping young New York hitters. "He (Williams) said he would enjoy working with our kids. I think that's super," said Steinbrenner. From Wire service Reports 'M'M'b-ball today the rest... Snow ...
