Pog S-Friday, Jahuary 27, 1978-The Michigan Daily A field trip: sporting the blizzard t Jhatg at' a e wkote By KATHY HENNEGHAN By HENRY ENGELHARDT For names like Tex Winter and Fred Snowden this storm may have negative effects on the sport thew' coach, but for Michigan students, up to their calculators in cloud drop- pings, it means a holiday. And Michigan students do enjoy a good holiday. what bettertime to bring out the WHAT BETTER time to bring out pigskin? A foot and a half of snow underfoot and duck fur for pads kept Markley residents warm and cush- ioned as they played a massive game yesterday. Lining up 20 or 25 to a side did make the game a tad more unusual than most. THE SAME conditions that can- celled classes brought a smile to the faces of many a cross country skier. Teaching fellow Ken Newbury, gliding his way to meet. with stu- dents, was enthused with conditions. "The class was cancelled," he said, "but maybe the students will want to party or have a snowball fight. "WHEN THEY announced that classes were canceled in Alice Lloyd, about 300 people started cheering," Newbury added before he turned away and skiied quickly across the bridge by Palmer Field. Though the tennis courts on Pal- mer Field were empty, dorm resi- dents were hard at play. Many made the trek to the Arb to tray, ski, toboggan, romp with a dog, report on what people were doing in the Arb of just admire the splendor of the Arb for its aesthetic pleasures. If Heaven is cold it should look like the Arb. THE HUGE TREES prevent the wind from entering while the branch- es hang heavy with the burden of the fresh snow. Glistening and gleaming like a diamond, the Arb is at peace with the world. People with smiles and trays march through the unshoveled trails, dotted with ski pole holes, on their way to a different kind of afternoon. A Stockwell reisdent from Ft. Lauderdale had never done this kind of think before and at first was some- what apprehensive. As last seen, however, she seemed to be enjoying her bumpy expeiences of downhill- ism. And so, as the snow slowly sank' into everywhere, Michigan students gave the spontaneous holiday a sporting chance. h CAMP TAMARACK Brightop and Ortonvifle, Michigan INTRVIEW NG FOR Counselors, Specialists, Supervisors, and many other camp positions JANUARY 31 Summer Placement Office CALL FOR APPOINTMENT--763-4117 Camp Tamarack is the residential summer camp sponsored by rthe Jewish Fresh Air Society, 6600 W. Bloom- field, Mi. 48033 Gophers' Thompson would have gone pro By The Associated Press MILWAUKEE-University of Min- nesota basketball star Mychal Thom- pson says he would have passed up his senior year to turn professional if the Milwaukee Bucks had not announced their plans to make Indiana's Kent Benson the first choice in last year's draft. THOMPSON HAD declared himself a hardship case for the National Basketball Association draft, making him eligible as a junior, but he later changed his mind. "SURE, I WOULD have stayed in the draft if the Bucks had taken me No. 1," Thompson said. "It was about a month and a helf before the draft when they an- nounced they were going for Benson, and that's when I decided to wait a year.'' "I HAVE NO regrets," Thomp- son said. "When I found out I wouldn't be No. 1 last year, Couch Dutcher said to me, "You can't im- prove on No. 1." I thought about that and realized he was right, so I took my name off the list." * I I U * U Christias &Istitutionl Power /1 I Prof. of Philosophy, Calvin College MR. And how about Mike Robinson? The latter has two years to go, but at the moment he's averaging a mere 1:43 playing time. " The Notre Dame basketball guide brags that only the Irish and UCLA have made four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances. For shame Notre Dame. Michigan (as well as Syracuse) shares the distinction. The Wolverines have competed once in the West, once in the Midwest and twice in Mideast Regionals. " Pet PEEVE: the Burns Security GUARD AT Crisler who has insisted on checking my press credentials at every home game for the past three seasons. You'd think he would recognize people after a year or so. Somebody MUST do it better! " One of the silliest things I've seen in a long time was Phyllis George's musical tribute to Walter Payton on NFL Today a while back. Footage of Payton was set to Carly Simon's single, "Nobody Does It Better." I don't watch much TV and was sure the feature bombed until I saw the same thing on Super Bowl Sunday-this time a history of the NFL to the tune of "The Way We Were." Do people really like that junk? * Wisconsin seems to have-a lot of trouble with academic ineligibility. The Badgersdropped two cagers last winter, although the fact went largely unnoticed. This year's victims, however, include starting quarterback An- thony Dudley and freshman cager Wes Matthews, a former high school All American who started against Michigan last week. Are Wisconsin athletes less academically inclined than their Big Ten counterparts? I doubt it. More likely, the Wisconsin Athletic Department fails to run interference for its athletes. " A strange sight: Gus Ganakas (fired two years ago) interviewing his successor, MSU coach Jud Heathcote, for WJIM TV in Lansing. You'd think the two men would feel slightly awkward. " Whatever happened to Pontiac Central, this year's wonder team? Street & Smith's basketball Yearbook pegged the Chiefs 15th in the country, yet they have dropped four straight and aren't even in Hal Schram's Top Ten. " If Joe Falls can write about his cat (see Sunday's Detroit Free Press(, then I can write about mine. Her name is MacAfee and she's only half Siamese. " I don't know why newspaper box scores list free throw attempts, but not field goal attempts. I'd rather know how well a player shot from the floor-the figure varies more and usually makes more of a difference. " The Michigan basketball coaches are taking a good hard look at Tim Andree, a junior center at Birmingham Brother Rice. Andree will play in Ann Arbor all right if he takes his team to the state finals. Rice coach Bill Norton feels Michigan snubbed his all-state guard Kevin Smith (a U of D freshman) last year and will probably point Andree elsewhere. Here's a bet that Andree will play his college ball in South Bend. " Unsolicited advice: I wish the Michigan Band would play "Rocky" and the like more often while giving fewer open air concerts, or whatever it was they did at Michigan Stadium last fall. " The new banners in Crisler are great with one exception-the UPI national championship banner. Quick, who won last year's title? Not even UPI Sports Editor Rich Shook would say Michigan did. Why boast about a mythical championship when Marquette won the real one? " Purdue basketball never seems to live up to its preseason billing. Ever wonder why? " I wish the Michigan starters would quit shining, jumping up and down and generally carrying on about officiating. This may sound corny, but whatever happened to good sportsmanship? " One team I know I'll never see in Hal Schram's Top Ten is my alma mater, East Lansing. Don Ashdown's Trojans haven't had a winning season since Ben (Pistons) Poquette graduated five years ago. last I looked, their record was i-ib. " As far as I'm concerned, Paul Heuerman's play has been a pleasant surprise at Crisler this winter,. Sure, he makes mistakes, but he plays with a reckless abandon and an enthusiasm that can make things happen. Magic's coach does card tricks * When MSU and its Magic Show (ugh) come to town, get a load of Jud Heathcote on the bench. The man uses flashcards to call his defenses. Effec- tive, I guess, but sort of silly looking. Or, as Mick McCabe puts it,"I thought those things went out of style back in the fourth grade." * Ricky Green looked a lot more relaxed at Cobo Wednesday night than he did in the early going as a starter for Golden State. But then, what does he have to lose? he's averaging just eight minutes a game as of late. Dr. Paul C.
