VCHECK YOUR GIFT ITEM I1Gea19es_ 9(110 wQtr1i Matmen face By MIKE PRITULA The Wolverine grapplers are now off and running toward their long range goal of an undefeated season; a goal that coach Rick Bay calls "realistic". The matmen are proud posses- sors of a perfect 2-0 record and take to the mats against Penn State tonight as they try to ex- tend their winning streak. The Nittany Lions have a winning streak of their own which in- cludes 38 straight dual meet wins over the past four years. Last year the Wolverines were victims of the Big Green Machine when they were downed by a 23-12 count. Michigan's last undefeated sea- son in wrestling was in 1966-67 when the team posted a 10-0 re- cord overall and wound up third in the nation. What does it take to go unde- feated? Coach Bay had this to say: "If we stay away from major injuries and really pick ourselves up for the tough teams like Penn State, Iowa, and Mich- igan State, we should be able to look realistically for that unde- feated season." Bay mentioned another thing with regard to the perfect year; consistency. s"We have to wrestle well against all our opponents. We almost lost to 0 h i o Univer- sity last weekend when it should not have been that close." The team narrowly edged Ohio U. by a score of 19-13, in what can generally be described as a disappointing performance in con- trast to their earlier 32-3 maul- ing of an outclassed Pitt team. In the Ohio meet the squad was saved by clutch one-point wins from Dave Curby at 190 and heavyweight Gary Ernst. tough Ironically, the meet against Penn State tonight will most liko- lv be decided by the last couple of matches. However, the lighter weights will feature a couple of return matchups from last year. At 118, soph Jim Brown will be facing Penn State's Tom Tea- ..........: '": ",C'.. . ."i":i ir"rs'. . 4". v... Xmas grappling DECEMBER 13-PENN ST.-home 28-29-Midwest Open at Evanston JANUARY 6-at Ohio St. garden, the same man who edged him by a score of 4-3 last year. In the 126 position, Bay has de- cided to use freshman Rick Val- ley. Valley, who is from Vir- ginia, will be wrestling his first varsity match. For the 142 slot, Bay .will choose between sopho- mores Rick Neff and Bill Schuck. The big match 'of the day will probably come at 158, where Wol- verine captain Mitch Mendrygal goes against Al Snellman. John King will still be wrest- ling for the injured Roger Ritz- man at 167 while John Ryan will be in his usual 177 position. "We're going to have to win four of the first six matches in order to be in there at the end" stated Bay, "But I suspect it will all come down to Curby and Ernst again". Curby will face Dale Bald- win who is a returning letter- man for the Nittany Lions. Bald- win defeated the Wolverines' Therlon Harris 7-3 a year ago and will give sophomore Curby all the troible he can handle.',- Ernst, at heavyweight, will be tangling with a man that is af- fectionately known as the "Nit- tany Mountain" out East. Penn State's Ira 'Lubert has never been beaten in college and has even slimmed down a bit this year..He weighed 260 pounds last yeaor when he drew.1-1 with Rick, Bolhouse of Michigan. This year he is weighing in around 210 lbs. and should be as solid as ever. "We have to wrestle damn well to beat them" said- Bay. "But we can't afford- a repeat per- formance of that Ohio meet or we'll get killed." - The meet -against the Lions will start at 7:30 tonight -at Crisler Arena with a J.V. -match versus Grand Rapids College starting at 5:30. Students will be admitted on their I.D. cards at the ton- nel entrance. The wrestlers will be working out for the, rest of the= week be- fore leaving for the holidays. The team will gather ir Evanston, Ill. on Dec. 28, 29 for the Midwest Open., This meet not only fea- tures some of the _top collegiate wrestlers, 'but -also older stars who are out of college. Olympic champion Dan Gable may be wrestling at this meet. 'On Jan. 6 the grapplers begin their quest for -the Big Ten tile with an away meet at Columbus, Ohio. Home of the, you guessed it, Ohio State Buckeyes. WHA Standings East Billboard The Michigan freshman basket- ball team will be in action tomor- row night against the contingent from Olivet. Game time is 8 p.m. Prior to that game, the all- campus IM championship game will be held commencing at six. Admission will be charged for the game.
