TEL AVIV UNIVERSITY ISRAE L 1973-74 SGC seeks end to victim less crime through new committee By TERRY MARTIN In an effort to initiate a con- structive fight against legal pun- ishment for victimless crimes, particularly those connected with marijuana, Student Government Council (SGC) created a special committee last week. The Committee for the Abolu- tion of Laws on Victimless Crim- es will be concerned with "the advancement of sexual freedom;" "self-determination over o n e ' s body," (abortion); "undercut- ting" organized control of gamb- ling, both by the State and by syndicated crime; and "the re- legalization and/or repeal of all laws and penalties relating to an individual's usage and purchasing of drugs." The last point includes provis- ion for the development of str'vz_- tural and operational plans for the Student Dope Co-opera tivo, which will open upon repeal of current drug laws. The committee will be allocat- ed $1,000, of which $200 will be given immediately and $800 af- ter the committee indicates how it plans to use the bulk of the money. According to Michael Lewis, SGC vice president for com- munity affairs, the purpose of the committee is to see that "things now kept in closets are brought out into the open." t'There are actions right now that mnake people lawbreakers when the law shouldn't even he there in the first place," says Lewis. "The whole point of the com- -ittee is to get some of these off the books. "Ideally," he continued, "we'd like to have a mass abortion-)n in the Diag, with500abeds and 500 doctors performing 500 abor- tions. That would prove how lud- icrous it is that laws against abortion exist at the same t?:e that the University is sending people to New York for abor- tions." Lewis was apparently refer- ring to a revolving fund used by the University for loans to stt- dents in need of an abortion. One of the proposal's sponsors, Ken Newberry (Group/Integrity) approves of a general effort against victimless crimes, inclod ing the obtaining of "freedom" for people of all sexual prefer- ences. (The Rainbow People's Party established a MichiganeM a r i- juana Initiative last year with the aim of collecting enough sig- natures to put a "legalized mari- juana" referendum on the No. vember ballot. They failed to col- lect the minimum number of sig- natures necessary.) Lewis, his mind still running to extrayaganzas, thinks that the Second Annual Ann Arbor Hash Festival, to be held in the Diag April 1, is a good opportunuty for the student body to show s o m e support for the movement. The proposal was sponsored by a diverse group of SGC members- at-large and President Bill Ja- cobs. The members of the com mittee, according to Jacobs, have not yet been appointed.
