Tuesday, December 12, 1972 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Nine Tuesday, December 12, 1972 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Nine Yu By RICK STUCK Jim Young, Michigan's defen- sive mastermind for the past four years, has been named head football coach at the Uni- versity of Arizona. Promising to "do the things necessary to produce g o o d teams," Young, 37, leaves the Michigan staff after four sea- sons in which the Wolverines led the Big Ten in total defense each year. e Young announced at yester- y day's press conference in Tus- o con that he is taking along two 0 Michigan assistant coaches to X serve in the same capacity at N Arizona. Larry Smith, who was the interior offensive line coach i here, will be the defensive coor- h dinator for Young, while Mike f Hankwitz will assume the duties s as the defensive ends coach. y Smith was one of the coaches Bo Schembechler brought from v Miami of Ohio in 1969, while 0 Hankkwitz is a former Wolver- e ine gridder, who played end for b the 1969 Rose Bowl team. i -ler Michigan basketball h lands Arizona coaching post daily sports NIGHT EDITOR: RANDY PHILLIPS else' ultimatum given him this year by Arizona officials. The old and the new coaches met for ver two hours yesterday with Weber going over the material Young would have to work with. Young emerged from the meet- ing confident, saying flatly, "I have been left with a lot of fine ootball players; we will not con- ider next season a rebuilding year." Young also added that he would go after the championship of the Western Athletic Confer- ence, of which Arizona is a mem- ber, in his first year. "We're go- ng to do everything possible to have a winning program here as soon as possible." He also indicated that he will be the offensive coordinator and hat he will not follow Schem- bechler's conservative football theory. "I am going to place a great deal of emphasis on de- veloing a more wide-open brand of football than we played in he Big Ten. We will center our offense around a strong option game and a versatile passing at- tack." Adding weight to his idea of a wide-open game was his state- ment that his number one prior- ty in the recruiting area will be speed. He said that after look- ng for players with speed he will hen go for height and size, in that order. ing to stick to the Midwest for recruiting". He added that he hopes to have his entire staff named by the end of the week ,emphasizing the fact that he is looking for a young staff. Young was chosen from a list of six coaches Strack interviewed as possible candidates for the job. Alex Agase, head coach at Northwestern withdrew his name from the running two weeks ago, and the other chief contender Purdue coach Tony Mason, said yesterday he would take the job. Mason was, reportedly ready to assume the job but it was re- ported in the middle of last week that he couldn't agree with Strack about the financial mat- ters of the deal and the hiring practice of assistant coaches. Strack said he offered the job to Young last Friday night at which time the new Wildcat coach quickly accepted the post. Young will meet with the team today and start his recruiting to- morrow, leaning heavily to the California side of the border which he says is a prime target area. Young, Smith, and Hankwitz will spend the next two weeks in the synshine before returning to Michigan for Christmas and the matter of relocating their families. Schembechler was unavailable for comment concerning the loss of the three coaches, and the imminent reshuffling of the Wol- verine staff..
