Coach Bob Johnson led his teams to a minimum of 20 victories in each of the three subsequent years, climaxed by last year's second place finish (Denver won the title on the season's final weekend), Big Ten championship, and third place, finish in the NCAA tournament. Everybody around town seems to be caught up in the fever this year, and for good reason. The Badgers are in the midst of what could be their best season ever,r owning an 11-1 mark with all the victories coming in succession. The two victories over Michigan this weekend (by scores of 6-3 and 10- 4) were merely a stepping stone to prominence, as it were. Says Athletic Director Elroy Hirsch: "I've seldom seen a group of fans like we have at our hockey games. Their enthusiasm for the Badgers is what we want to see throughout our athletic program t Those Coliseum sellouts and the record turned in by Coach Heel-Toe! Attention, aspiring racewalk- ers: Three free clinics in race- walking techniques will be con- ducted at Waterman Gymnas- ium this week and next. Bill Weigle, current national champ- ion in the 50 kilometer walk, and a contestant in the r e c e n t Olympic Games in Munich will r conduct the clinics, to be held { Wednesday, Friday and n e x t Monday. Each session will begin at 11:45 a.m. They're open to anyone interested, so why n o t drop by? Besides, they a r e free. Getting the crowd fired up for the game itself, as easy a job as that may seem tosbe, is the func- tion of the Band. -Fifty or 60 musi- cians out of a pool of about 75, all of whom are members of the Wis- each game. They begin playing about a half-hoer before the open- ing face-off and provide between periods entertainment as well as leading various cheers and chants to start the crowd in action. The red-and-white blazered en- semble is directed by Professor Mike Leckrone, who also directs the Marching Band and is partly responsible for the band's revival at hockey games. Proviously, it performed only at basketball gam- es. "I'm kind of a sports fanatic myself," he explains. Whatever it is that gets people to show up, it works, as the band members, at least, arrive almost an hour before game time, scramb- ling to get the best seats of the allotted group, and putting their music in order. The big thing is, of course, that everybody loves a winner and at Madison they sure have one. And it shows no signs of stopping now. The Badgers certainly don't have a veteran team, with a majority of freshmen and sophomores on their roster, which spells nothing but a bright future in Madison. Dave Pay, who scored four goals Saturday, is only a freshman. Michigan took only one senior to Wisconsin, so maybe that spells a bright future, too. But it doesn't spell anything at the present. Not with a 2-10 record, anyway. Well, now the Wolvesttake a break from WCHA play until January. They certainly won't be expecting any rest when the time comes to turn on the full steam again, for it will be a long hard road back if they don't want to be left out in the cold. (M) - Assistant Coach Barry Switzer withdrew his name from consideration as head football coach at Michigan State and will stay at Oklahoma Univer- sity, he said yesterday. "I'm very appreciative and hon- ored that they would consider me for the position," he said. "But after returning from a visit to the campus I spent several days de- liberating what would be best for me and my family. I feel it is ad- visable for me to remain at my present position at the University of Oklahoma.'' Switzer, in charge of Oklahoma's wishbone offense, was one of sev- eral coaches being interviewed by Michigan State to replace Duffey Daugherty. a crack-back block by Alworth, who is sent in motion. Allen said the Cowboys used thet play at least four times in the first half, including a touchdown run by Calvin Hill on whichPardee bruised a knee. Pardee stayed in the game after the play, but then did not play in the second half. i "John David Crow used a play like that against Deacon Jones and clipped him when I was with the Rams," said Allen. "He told his coach he didn't want to do it any more. "If the officials had seen it and called it, it would have been an illegal block," said Allen. .,....::.... y.r...............:....:.".^...........
