"Describe feel- ing to everybody in the world." It's a problem that has both- ered almost everyone in t h e space program - ever since Al Shepard made the first stab into space 11 years ago and blurted: "What a beautiful sight." The men who go into space and the men who send them in- to space, and the planners and experimenters, all are scientists and engineers - people who live in a world of acronyms and sym- bols, computer, readouts a n d. graphs. Their language is their own and the poetry in their souls is a stammer on the lips. The astro- naut as philosopher has been a dud. The first men to see the moon, up close, Frank Borman, James Lovell and William And- ers, expressed what they felt by quoting Genesis: "In the begin- ning, God created the heaven and the earth . .." Top people in the space agency often say there might not have been such a letdown of public interest in space flights had there been more than "what a beau- tiful sight," and other gee-whiz variety descriptions in 26 prev- ious excursions away from earth. "I think the one philosophical point," Schmitt said Friday af- ter talking about what he was seeing, "is that somebody, pro- bably three-and-a-half billion years ago or so, sould h a v e* looked at the earth and described patterns not too dissimilar. "It was within those patterns that life developed, and now you see . . . what that life has pro- gressed to doing, and I cer- tainly think that all of us feel it has not .stopped doing that pro- gression . ..,, Men have been saying the same thing since ancient times. The Bible says it in Ecclesiastes: One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth forever." Schmitt said that a poet aboard a spaceship "certainly couldn't look at that fragile globe and not think about the ancient sails of life that are crossing its p a t h and wonder ahead to the present, to the modern sails of life." Those, he said, "are in t h e country in all sort of different guises and working to the same end and that is to put that life farther into the universe." And he added: "I certainly hope that some day in the not too distant future, the guy can fly who can express these things." STATE Government spokesmen Francis- co Tatad told a press conference that 85 people had been detained for questioning in connection with the alleged plot and three men had. earlier signed a voluntary confes-I sion which "warned that attempts shall continue." He identified the three as Man- nel Crisologo, described as an ex- plosives expert, Eduardo Figueras, a former labor leader, and Antonio Arevalo of whom no details were disclosed. Tatad said the three had linked politicians from both the ripposi- tion Liberal Party. and the ruling Nacionalista Party and retired mil- itary oficers with the alleged con- spiracy, which he said started as long ago as December 1969. Tatad said that, as a result of the detailed trios alleged statement, other men taken into custody ja- cluded Sergio.Osmena, believed to be the son of a former senator, and Eugenio Lopez, publisher of the now defunct Banila Chronicle. Tatad's statement came 48 hours after an assailant wielding a Lot- long blos knifenstabbed Marcos' wife Imedla at an awards cere- mony.
