The gunfight in the Shankill, a stronghold of the Protestant, paramilitary, climaxed three days of rioting by Protestant mobs led by marauding bands of cudgel- wielding squads of the Ulster De- fense Association. (UDA) It came a few hours after the extremist organization demanded the withdrawal of the Parachute Regiment's 1st Battalion, because the crack unit was allegedly beat- ing up Protestants. UDA anger against the para- troopers has been building up for several weeks since Irish Repub- lican Army guerrillas sneaked deep into the Shankill last month and blew up a bar, wounding 55 persons. The Protestants charge the troops failed to protect them from Roman Catholic IRA terror- ists. shoot-out The army suggested in a state- ment that the UDA lured soldiers into an ambush, triggering the sharp fight. There were no re- ported injuries among the sold- iers. Rioting flared in the grimy, working class tenement district at dusk. Troops reported masked bands of the UDA moving in military- type formations and armed with clubs and shields. The area re- mained tense from two previous nights of rioting. Two armored personnel carriers were halted in Matchet Street by a 40-man UDA squad. Youths stoned the vehicles, which pulled back. The paratroopers poured out and dispersed the mob with rubber bullets.
