I choke up at the thought or osmng them," concluded Jack Anderson. Anderson, the Pulitzer Prize win- nling columnist and self proclaimed "watch dog on government," spoke last night at Hill Aud. to a crowd of nearly 400 people. Sounding more like a preacher than a journalist, Anderson de- clared, "The public's right to know in tantamount. Your right to know is more important than the Presi- dent's right to know." Anderson spoke of the presiden- tial election at great length. He implored, "On Tuesday you have a choice between a man who is unskilled in pragmatic politics but understands the people and the in- cumbent who knows the paperwork but not the human undercurrent. Choose wisely!" Anderson assessed his duty as a reporter as "breaking the jour- nalistic ice. I want to know what the President doesn't want me to know." Among the many scoops Ander- son has scored are ITT case and the revaluation of top-secret mem- oranda about the India-Pakistan war. Nonetheless Anderson is prob- ably best known for the charges he leveled at Thomas Eagleton, former Democratic vice presiden- tial candidate, which he later re- tracted. "We reported we had located citations charging Tom Eagleton with drunken driving," Anderson explained. "Later I thought that was too strong so we issued a clarifying bulletin - that's all we did. Other reporters blew the whole story out of proportion." Commenting on the retraction he said, "I thought I was being mag- nanimous. It hurt my credibility but if we had been taken to court we could have proved everything we said." Later Anderson spoke about the thirst for power in the government. "Our forefathers knew the govern- ment needed a watch dog. The government must be restrained,"~ he contended. Three weeks ago the committee presented a first draft to the board and two public hear- ings were held to discuss the policy. Ted Heusel, board president, said he can find nothing wrong with the present policy and has no intention of scrapping it. "It is my belief that it is the best policy the school board has ever had. It may well be a model policy for the entire state," he said. The protesters, including area junior high and high school stu- dents and members of the Human Rights, Party and Ozone House, began their vigil at 7:30 a.m. yes- terday morning in front of Tappan hoping to draw a larger segment of the school's populace into the strike. When this was not accomplished, a vote was taken and at 11 a.m. students decided to picket the dis- trict administrative offices and talk to Superintendent of Schools Bruce McPherson. At the administration building, the group, 30 in number, staged a sit-in when informed that Mc- Pherson was unavailable. When the group refused to leave the building the police were called. Captain Robert Conn, the police liaison with city schools, arrived' with one other officer and in- structed the demonstrators that they had the option of either being arrested or meeting with McPher- son Tuesday. The group voted for the meeting with McPherson. i. '4. E i i t I I I- .4 .4 special divisions in the Exact Sciences & Jewish Studies. Spring semester at Tel Aviv University.
