RECOUNT MAY BE CRUCIALI

Fate of Trudeau govt. si

OTTAWA (Reuters)-Canadian
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau
conferred with his cabinet yes-
terday to discuss the fate of his
Liberal government following its
shock defeat in Monday's gen-
eral election.
A handful of votes could decide
whether he will have to step
down to make way for the op-
position Progressive Conservative
leader, Robert Stanfield, who
emerged with a bare one-seat
lead in the House of Commons.
A recount in a rural Ontario
constituency, which the Progres-
sive Conservatives won by just

12 votes, could tip the scales
back in favor of Trudeau's Lib-
erals.
Provisional results gave the
Conservatives 109 seats to 108 for
the Liberals in the 264-seat
Canadian House of Commons.
However, the final results will
not be known for about a week
until recounts are made in at
least half a dozen close con-
stituencies.
There will be a meeting of the
full government cabinet today,
Trudeau said, and his statement
will follow it.
There has been no indication

as to what course Trudeau will
follow, although Stanfield has
called on the Liberals to resign
immediately and said he himself
is prepared to form a govern-
ment.
Constitutionally, Trudeau is
not obliged to resign at this
stage. He could remain in office
and then test his strength in
Parliament to see if he can
gather the support of the smaller
opposition parties.
The balance of power is held
by the socialist New Democratic
Party with 30 seats while the
