Wednesday, November 1, 1972 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Eleven Wednesday, November 1, 1972 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Eleven Speedy By MARC FELDMAN In recent years as Michigan has climbed to the top of the Big Ten and back into national prominence, the theme has been gall-control and a lack of mistakes and sometimes, a lack of variety. Things are going quite well in Ann Arbor for the Maize and Blue in 1972, but a new, exciting speedster has helped to erase some if Michigan's conservative stigma by run- Zing back kickoffs, punts, and generally naking a nuisance of himself. His name, Gil Chapman. Chapman, although just a sophomore, has become a favorite of Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler and Wolverine fans who "love the little guy." Chapman's speed and versatility make him a source of instant excitement whenever he touches the ball. UNFORTUNATELY for rival coaches and players, they can't fully appreciate Chap- man's skills as they are supposed to stop him and their reaction ranges from panic to heart failure. Chapman first won the hearts of Michigan fans with a dazzling 77 yard punt return about a month ago against the Tulane Green Wave. However, that was just one of many Wolverine touchdowns that day and he picked an even better time for his next collision with glory. Chapman MICHIGAN and Michigan State were and its b locked in a tight defensive duel as the the top r Wolverines held a tenuous 3-0 lead in the DESPI second half. The play started out innocently offers p enough as quarterback Dennis Franklin those wl rolled right, but he handed the pigskin to time col his split end Chapman who reversed the 23rd ina flow of the play on an end-around and and othe scampered 58 yards for the touchdown and his servi a hard fought victory over the Spartans. Howev Chapman also ran an Illinois kickoff back "I want for a touchdown in Champaign as Illini play Big fans got a little of the heart failure that main rea had been reserved for visiting teams until "If I then. might a This success hasn't come as a surprise Midwest to many people as Chapman was recruited "OHIO by over 200 colleges and universities after tried to an unparalleled football career at Thomas go to a Jefferson High in Elizabeth, N. In high school, Chapman scored East as 514 points and rushed for close to 5000 end an yards. Taking these statistics on a per named game basis, an average Saturday afternoon "Penn S for Chapman consisted of three touchdowns time bu and about 190 yards on the ground. coaches Chapman was by no means the whole "My1 team as Jefferson's fullback, Roger Taylor, encoura received a scholarship from West Virginia confiden dazzlmas fans best lineman, Rich Wood, starts for ranked USC Trojans. Chapman started this season sharing the wingback position with junior Clint Haselrig but he has since been moved into a platoon role with Bo Rather at split end. Chapman who seemingly has adjusted to his new position says, "I'll play wherever the Coach wants me to. I'll get used to the new position but I've been playing tailback since I was nine years old in Pop Warner League. I caught 6 touchdown passes in high school but those were when I came out of the backfield." Chapman has done well at split end with seven pass receptions for 80 yards, in addition to his rushing yardage of 149 yards on 25 carries. At this point, however, Chapman is more concerned with winning football games than where he's playing. "I'm seeing a lot of action and we're winning; that's enough for me." THE SOPHOMORE feels that the key to the success of the 1972 Wolverines has been the fact that they were not expected to be as powerful as they have shown themselves to be. Gil doesn't want to look too far ahead on the schedule but the Ohio State game looks like another 'Game of the Century.' "We have a lot of weapons for them." One of them is a 5-9 speedster named Chapman.
