They do state, though, that it is a step in the right di- rection to have had certain ques- tions permanently raised. A voice at the end of the film states that, "He and She have begun to rethink themselves historically."; Godard and Gor- in are telling us that we, each in our own personal way, must do the same. urday, the two directors have shown an interest in combining the two. This interest, to my mind, seemsto be heading in a direction that should prove to be much more worthwhile, both politically and aesthetically. In talking about certain as- pects of Tout Va Bien that I find important, I have neglected to discuss the aspects of the movie I believe the directors think are the most important; the analy- sis of the three elements of so- ciety (manager, worker, and un- ion or democrat), their vision of Capitalist life as a process from producer to consumer and the long, horizontal tracking shots they use frequently to empha- size this process. Such are time Enjoy Yourself - Join The Daily Staff Today! ' "' 13 O Tout Va Bien is both non- propagandistic and f o c u s, e d, pointed, yet ambiguous. Godard, in his career, has moved front an interest solely in style to (in his work with Gorin) an interest solely in the political. In Tout Va Bien,. and in their talks Sat- and space limitations. One more word, about Letter to Jane, a 45 minute discourse on a photograph of Jane Fonda listening . to Vietnamese peas- ants. Here Godard and Gorin return to their old political propagandizing, d e c l a i m i n g' American smugness and self- righteousness in their own very- smug and self-righteous man- ner. The film is 85 per cent double - talk, 1,5 per cent sub- stance, and while that substance is probably valid, the form and the tone of the film were dull and offensive. Here's hoping that the new direction in which the directors seem to be taking off will lead them away from the obfuscation and stridency of junk like this. Most of the new songs are written about Lightfoot's favorite theme: love. Perhaps it's inevitable, then, that some of his material sounds trite or overworked. "That Same Old Obsession," for instance, does more than title the song. It describes some of it. Clauses such as "The sun shines like gold" and "I miss her so much I could die" intermingle with more expressive, original lyrics. "Can't Depend on Love," a slow-paced new tune, includes lyrics in a more thought-provok- ing vein ("I'm on the outside of an inside kind of love."). The rest of the new material could be termed "pleasant." In concert it sounds like his past work. Yet keeping the same style is no sin, espcially if it's unique. Besides, Lightfoot says that on the album there are new kinds of instrumental backings with autoharp, banjo, pedal steel guitar and that he "plays the chair on it," Although the backings for songs on his albums are usually well done, Lightfoot's songs stand so well alone without them on stage. -- That's got to be one test of a' "good song." Noticeably absent Saturday night in his new material, how- ever, were political songs, a few of which are scattered on his past albums. "I don't want to get involved in politics because I'm a foreigner," he said in his dressing room, "I could never write the material."
