"With the small classes here, I hope I can get to know the students well enough to have some real impact on their' lives." This remarkable amount of freedom given to both teachers and students also carries over to the process of course selection: Students must still fulfill the same minimum academic require- ments as their counterparts in other high schools, but they are also offered a choice of Commun- ity Resource courses, which cov- er an incredible range of sub- jects. Taught largely by community people, the courses include such erudite academic studies as astro- physics and the psychology of child development, as well as the more down-to-earth fields of real estate, apartment managing and organic gardening. A certain number of these cours- es are held in the school build- ing while others, more on the or- der of on-the-job-training, take place in various parts of the com- munity. Some university faculty and stu- dents are involved in these cours- es, but for the most part the teachers are just interested per- sons who were contacted by Com- munity representatives. Because of the tremendous num- ber of Community Resource cours- es, classes are held any time be- tween eight in the morning and ten at night. Aside from the tre- mendous scheduling problems this High school aims at innovation situation creates, it also means that students may have as many as five or six hours between class- es. They ofter. s;:nd this time talk- ing and loung ng in the halls or on the school's grounds, and this re- laxed atmosphere has drawn some criticism from the community. According to student Kurt Lan- derhort, one irate citizen called up a local radio show and complain- ed that he was nearly blinded by all the marijuana smoke he saw in the hallways. A quick glance around the school revealed no trace of these giant smoky clouds, and Scott McBride, a freshmen at Community, ex- pressed the opinion that dope was probably hiss common at Com- munity than at the other Ann Ar- bor schools.
