a s t i g m a to the program.
"Whenever people think of us, they'
think of us as deficient . .. as the
dmnmies," he says. "I know
thait's the way a majority of white
students view us."
-Yates' statements, however, are-
n't back~ed up by the reactions of
the two students in a CULS sec-j
ti of English 123 who strongly
endorsed the program..
Both fay they rejected anti-
CUbS sentiment they picked up
d,!ring summer orientation-the
time most potential CULS students
are contacted. "It doesn't bother.
us because we have good teach-
ers ," one says.
Although 'Yates calls ClJLS' po-
sition "precarious", the Univer-
sity has strengthened its financial
~support of the program.
This year the CULS budget rose
to $127,998-a whopping 'increase
of $47,500 over fiscal 1971=72.
Yet according to Yates, $20,000
of this increase actually went this
year to "recoup the loss of. the
same amount last year in budget

cuss.
Rhodes, however, disagrees with
Yates, saying that the $20,000 was '
voted as 'a post-budget item to
CULS last year, and that no mon-
ey has been cut fromt its budget.
Further clarification of this sit-
uation will not come from Rhodes,
who refuses to discuss matters of
budget. "You really can't make
difficult decisions like this (bud-
getary) with open-air diplomacy,"
he says.
Exactly where the increase will
go remains hazy.
Yates says the program has not
grown in terms of "sheer size."
The additional funds, he says, will
go toward hiring administrative
and research assistants, extra
clerical help, special counselors in
the Residential College, and grad-
uate students who have taken the
place of undergraduates in various
jobs.
Yates adds that the rest of the
new funds will be absorbed in the
process of dropping certain CULS
services and adding others.
