TOPIC RECORDING ARTIST LOU KILLEN from England 1421 Hill SMET Charles McCracken, president ofl the local branch of the American Federation of State, County and M,1nicipal Employes, has sued the, University for back payments re- sulting from a decision in March 1970 favoring the union's interpre- tation of their collective bargain-' ing agreement. No ruling on the suit was made+ at a hearing Wednesday before Washtenaw County Circuit Court1 Judge William Ager.1 At the time of arbitration, both, the University and the union were asked to submit a joint requestI for clarification of the decision; concerning the amount of back pay due McCracken. McCracken charges that the Uni- versity owes him approximately two years of back wages as com- pensation for time he spent re- viewing grievances from union' members. University Atty. William Lemmer says that the union did not agree to this joint request and the matter was dropped until they were noti- fied Tuesday that this new lawsuit had been filed.7 The union, which represents allt service and maintenance workers employed by the University, feels that if reparation is not made it "will suffer irreparable injury" by- virtue of the erosion of its status1 as bargaining representative. Supporters of the state's Novem- ber abortion reform referendum will kick off their publicity cam- paign with a benefit Sunday at 8:00 p.m. in Hill Auditorium.
