It is also a film directed by Ken Russell. The two state- ments do not seem compatible, do they? But they are. Fear not. The story concerns a touring troupe ofaactors doing a produc- tion of a musical called "The Boy Friend" out in the Midlands of England far from London. Not a great way to make a name for yourself. Well, one day the lead- ing lady twists her ankle, and in the best "the show must go on" tradition, the boss sends out Polly, the understudy, to do the part. "You're going to go out there a youngster, you've got to come back a star!" (Yes, he really says that) Polly (superbly played by Twiggy) does not know her part very well, and to make matters worse, she is bedazzled and flustered by the leading man. At this point who should wander into her day of torment but Mr. DeThrill, the talking picture pro- ducer!!! What to do? Well, every- one else in the cast (except Polly of course) quickly decides that the thing to do is to attract at- tention to themselves and thus become a motion picture star. And the fun begins. The Boy Friend is a musical that takes place on stage, back- stage, in Polly's romantic imagi- nation, and in the film fantasies of DeThrill. It is also a sort of cinematic meditation by Ken Russell on the history of the movie musical in all its forms and dimensions. Of course, your appreciation of the film may be greater if you understand all these inside comments, but not knowing them will not make The Boy Friend any less enjoyable. It is one of those movies where you just sit back and let the thing carry you along. Nothing more. -WILLIAM MITCHELL And Yet Another Week Of. -.
