Cali- fornia native. Summer sunshine one day and snow on the next can really wreck havoc with track workouts. However, Farmer has learned the vagaries of Mich- igan's weather. "It always snows the week of April 7th," he claims. To circumvent the irritating but predictably inconsistent mid- west clime, Farmer's thinclads are headed -southragain. The site for this week's roadshow is in- famous Knoxville, Tennessee, where some of Michigan's finest runners and jumpers will com- pete in the Dogwood Relays. The mood for this excursion is extremely optimistic. Farmer said, "We opened our season here last year and were extremely successful, and everyone is look- ing forward to going back." The list of Michigan accomp- lishments at last year's relays was impressive. Steve Adams won both the shot put and discus. The distance medlay re- lay team set a school record of 9:49.0 and the mile relay team ran a fine 3,14.8 for a fifth place finish. The squad is relatively healthy. Only freshman pole vaulter Ter- ry Hart is on the sidelines, suf- fering from a pulled hamstring,' Greg Syphax has recovered from his ankle injury and has looked extremely sharp in recent work- outs. "We've just completed our best week of practice this year," said Farmer. Eyphax, one of last year's co- captains, was attempting to switch to the 440 intermediate hurdles, a Wolverine weakness, when his ankles acted up, forc- ing him to sit out the Western Kentucky meet and return to the flat races. In the field events,aAdams will defend his shot and discus crowns. Freshmen Mike Nowacki and Doug Gibbs will high jump and fellow frosh Abraham But- ler will compete in the long and triple jump., Out on the track, the Wolve's have entries in two individual events and three relays. Murray will defend his high hurdle crown with competition from teammate Mel Reeves. Murray and Reeves will also run on the 440 relay team. Greg Syphax and Kim Rowe will battle each -other for the 220 dash title, and team up on the 440 and mile relay teams. Al Cornwell and Eric Chapman will round out the mile relay and team with Rowe and Bill Bolster in the Distance Medley relay. In this "relay Rowe will lead off with a quarter mile, hand to Cornwell for a half mile, Chapman will run three quarter miles and Bolster will anchor with a full mile. Bolster is also entered in the invitational mile. Although - the competition is fairly stiff, the only important schools at the meet should be Michigan and Tennessee. Also, there will be plenty of s m a l1 schools with good track teams such as Murray State and Mem- phis State.
