(Continued from Page 1) Psychology Prof. Dick Mann pointed out that HRP factionalism "turned a lot of people off." Ad- mitting that this was true, Coun- cilman Jerry De Grieck observed, "The primary in the Second Ward was a real problem in divisive- ness." De Grieck pointed out that though HRP captured the same precincts in this election as they did last year, the difference in student turn-out meant that last year's winning student bulge was lacking. De Grieck's fellow councilper- son, Nancy Wechsler, who chaired the meeting, blamed the HRP loss in the First Ward on the fact that Democratic winner Norris Thomas ran a campaign emphasizing that he was the only black on council. She said HRP candidate Frank Shoichet lost in the Second Ward because "liberal women voted for a woman" - and elected Demo- crat Carol Jones. (The listing of HRP's financial woes - they are roughly $650 in the red - inspired a passing of the Uriah Heep with SPECIAL GUEST STAR Billy Preston and McKendree Spring APRIL 7, 8:00 P.M. at A.S.C.E. In Washington, Gray had an-, nouinced he had asked that his nomination be withdrawn shortly before Nixon made his formal an- noulncement: Atty. Gen. Richard Kleindienst said through a spokesman that he was deeply disappointed by what he called the turn of events. "He is one of the most loyal Americans I know," said Klein- dienst. "He wasan excellent choice to be permanent director and should have been confirmed." The spokesman said Gray tele- phoned Kleindienst and told him of his decision about an hour be- fore he issued his statement. "I have asked the President to withdraw my nomination for the position of director ofthe Federal Bureau of Investigation," Gray said in a brief statement released by a FBI spokesman. "The basis for this decision is my deep conviction that the FBI, a great and uiiique American in- stitution of vital service to the President and the American people, is entitled to permanenttleadership at the earliest possible time."
