In actuality, w h e n friends exchange accolades about their stash, they are unknowingly rating the delta-9 THC content of the grass. Dr. Thomas Dolby, a leading re- searcher of THC chemistry at the University, has- collected interest- ing data accumulated from experi- ments done on marijuana .1 Though this information has yet to be published in Consumers' Re- port, Dolby notes, "high quality dope, e.g., Columbian Flower Tops, maximally contains 15 milligrams delta-9 THC per gram of dupe. At the other end of the spectrum, a couple of tokes of the "home grown" Indiana Green will never initiate a buzz, packing a meager 0.04 mg. delta-9 THC/gm. dope." For the hash enthusiast, the quality of purchase is just as varied. Depending on the source and age of the hash, the amount of T H C will range from 0.1-40 mg. /gram. On a more specific level, the in- dividual parts of the marijuana plant also exhibit this potency var- iance. Most desired are the bracts, or female flowers, which contain the greatest concentration of sessile (THC-secreting) glands. This den- sity progressively decreases in the leaves, stems, . roots and seeds, which are all equipotent in males and females. "The bracts are .so superior," Dolby notes, "that in the produc- tion of most hash the male plants are pulled out and destroyed." The male facilitates this process by flowering two weeks before the female. Soon after, it dies and turns a yellow color. The readily trecognizable plant is then dis- carded. Horticulture hobbyists should ben- efit from the knowlege that the dope's potency depends upon the heredity of the parents, not the locale in which it's grown. A study made in the early 1970's revealed that for, th r ee generations, the F delta-9 THC content of Panamanian I weed grown in New Hampshire re- mained constant and vice versa. With this useful information, people in the Boston area will likely plant things besides beans. National emergencies are rare, but if grass ever completely re- places lager as America's favorite evil, breweries will be well pre- pared. The excess hops can be grafted to the dope bushes, and its trace cannabinoid content -will in- crease many fold. Marijuana conneisseurs will be the first to sense that delta-9 THC is not a stable compound. A stash left at room temperature will lose approximately 10% of its THC every month. The guilty culprit is oxygen, which consumes more THC than the heartiest of smokers ever could. The oxidized THC is con- verted to cannabinol, which is con- siderably less active. Dolby, offering alternative solu- tions to this dilemma, adds, "It is best to smoke the grass with great speed or store the goods in your refrigerator or freezer." As a public service to j o i n t smokers, an imaginative Californ- ian scientist did a study to deter- mine the fate of delta-9 THC as the joint is toked. His dilligence showed that burn- ing alone destroys half the THC, 4% escapes via the sidestream, 20% is directly consumed, while over one quarter remains in the "roach." Thus, for a guaranteed super buzz, it is best to save the roaches and combine their contents into a "second generation" joint. There is occasional controversy as to whether toking up or endulg- ing in brownie delights produces a more potent high. "It is quite con- clusive," explains Dolby, "that a given quantity of grass is more enzyme reaction has just the op-I efficient when inhaled rather than posite effect on harder drugs like ingested. cocaine, morphine and barbituates.
