The coffin of Marshall Philippe Pe- .
tain, French "hero of Verdun" dur-
ing the First World War and archt
traitor who collaborated with thet
Nazis during the next, was stolent
from its lonely island grave Sun-
day night.
There were indication that die-
hard Petainists were responsible
for the robbery.-
Right-wing groups have long de-
manded that Petain's body be mov-;
sd to the national military ceme-'
tery at Douamount, near Verdun,t
the scene of Petain's historic vic-
tory over the Germans in 1917.
Condemned to death in 1945 for
his role in the Vichy government,

the coffin to the Verdun area to
await a government decision on
whether Petain could be bu'ried on
the Douaumont battlefield.
De Gaulle made conciliatory ges-
tures to the memory of Petain, as
a soldier, but he always refused3
appeals from Petain's supporters
to allow the body to be moved to
Douaumont.

expressed horror and indignation
