blatantly illegal," Goldstein com-
men ted.
"The police selectively enforces
laws against various elements of'
society," added Gabe Kaimowitz,
also a lawyer. DeGrieck labeled
those elements of society as being1
"gays, blacks, and young freaks."
Several possible solutions to the
police department's problems were
raised during the hearing. Some
participants claimed that the griev-
ance office has dealt inadequatelyI
with citizen complaints.
"The office has little power. We
can only make recommendations'

to the police," explained Rufus
Cole, a member of the city's griev-
ance office.
Wechsler indicated more com-
munity control of police procedures
and priorities is necessary. "We
must put pressure on the Demo-
crats and Republicans to bring
about the necessary changes," she
said.
"Many of the department's prob-
lems lie within the bureaucracy
and men like (Police Chief Walter)
Krasny," DeGrieck charged.
Several people at the hearing,
however, praised the police depart-
ment and individual officers. Three
police officers attended the meet-
ing, claiming they came in an un-
official capacity.

health care is the furor over the
selection of a new county health
director. Dr. Otto Engelke, who
has held the post for the last 32
years, announced his resignation
last June.
Jim Pelikan, speaking for the
Medical Committee on Human
Rights-a local citizens group-fo-
cused on the selection process for
the new director and called it an
example of "people in public office
using their position to advance
private interests."
Critics, among them Pelikan,
have charged that Engelke has
"handpicked" his successor for the
job and that his choice is in dan-
ger of being approved by the city's
Board of Health "without any com-
munity input."
The health director is hired by
the Board of Health, whose mem-
bers were all appointed by pre-
vious Republican-dominated Boards
of Commissioners.
The Board of Health's search
committee, Pelikan charged, com-
piled information on only one can,
didate and submitted only one
name, not several, to the Board
