Bethlehem Steel Some sample meat prices at local stores If you're tired (and probably sick) of eating cottage cheese and beans and peanut butter and yogurt and grilled cheese sand- wiches twice or thrice a day; "meat" is something synonomous with spring break and the re- frigerator back home; . . . grit your teeth and read on, for re- lief, in the form of a juicy steak, may be just around the proverbial corner.. The Ann Arbor Meat Co-op, or- ganized by SGC, has been op- erating for about three weeks with the idea of making a wide variety of meats available at a cost that even impoverishedastu- dents can afford. In conjunction with Sergeant Pepper's General Store, 1028 East University, the co-op of- fers over twenty varieties of meat at prices significantly low- er thar those of other r e t a i l stores in the area. (See table). The low rates are made 'pos- sible by Ernie Ajlouny, owner and operator of Sergeant Pep- per's, who sells the meat to the co-op at nearly wholesale pric- es. When asked his reasons for doing so,i Ajlouny called his in- volvement with the co-op ". . . a sincere thing. I'm here with the fagilities and enough time that I can afford to offer a reduced rate. And if I can do most of the students a favor and let peo- ple know we're alive at the same time, we both come out ahead."- The co-op has no membership regulations. The meat is then ordered by Sergeant Pepper's and is available for customer, pickup at the store- the next Sa- turday. The fluidity of the coop is evident in its loose organizational structure. Cliff Sloane, who is currently SGC vice-president for the co- op, went so far as to say that ". . No one person should take too much, responsibility; every- one should be able to work on an equal level." And when asked if this condi- tion might lead to confusion and inefficiency, Sloan replied, "If people won't contribute and work. for the co-op, they just don't deserve, to have one." At present the co-op is being run by a relatively small nuc- leus of people headed by Gregj Batey, The venture is completely non- profit yet costs SGC nothing to operate, since all labor involved is donated voluntarily. But the co-op is not for every- body. In fact, Sloane has ex- pressed a strong desire to end j his direct involvement with the co-op, leaving any organizational duties to Batey . . . but then, Sloane is a vegetarian. Some people wonder why electric utilities are con- vinced that nuclear plants like this are Qeeded. They wonder why electricity can't be generated by just burning coal, oil, and natural gas. So, let's talk about it. Michigan must have electricity for its industrial economy. Perhaps twice as much in the next 10 years. There just isn't enough natural gas and low- And although coal is plentiful, most of it contains a lot of sulfur. So much that, with present technology, we can't burn it and meet today's air pollution standards. One day the problem will be solved. But Michigan can't wait until then. It needs reliable electric energy today - and much, much more tomorrow. That's why nuclear plants like Big Rock Point, Palisades - and others being planned - are essential to your future.
