Official sources said the resig- nation was designed to give Bor- daberry a free hand to deal with Stennis shows more improvement WASHINGTON (A) - Sen. John Stennis (D-Miss.) continues to show improvement in his recovery from wounds received during an attempted holdup, but still remains in very serious condition, .a hos- pital spokesperson reported yester-' day. Stennis, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, was shot in the chest and thigh ten days ago and underwent extensive surgery earlier this week. The spokesperson for Walter Reed Army Medical Center said Stennis "has shown continued, gradual im- provement and is responding to treatment." Stennis has been moved from the surgical intensive care unit and is now receiving intensive c a r e in a private room. this crisis. But the move also automatical- ly met the major rebel demand- resignation of newly named De- fense Minister Antonio Francese, the fourth defense minister in four months. Whether this would still be suf- ficient to calm the irate army and air force officers was not immediately clear. Heavily armed sailors moved in from the port area to throw a cordon around the whole of the old city, where government house is situated. The crisis blew up to storm proportions Thursday night when the army and air force refused to accept Francese, appointed just two days ago in an effort to resolve a previous squabble be- tween the military and the legis- lature. The two armed forces an- nounced on television they would not obey any orders issued by Francese. As loyal marines set heavy machine guns on the barricades around the old city yesterday morning, a destroyer was sta- tioned about half a mile off shore behind the navy positions. Army and air force patrols took over six radio stations. Three went off the air and rebel offic- ers used the others to broadcast their demand for the dismissal of Francese. Simultaneously, the navy high command summoned all officers and men on leave to return to their units immediately. Banks were ordered closed, shops shut their doors and offic- ers advised civilians to leave the cordoned area. Bordaberry, who took office March 1 last year, spent Thurs- day night in discussions with his cabinet and aides. He headed home just before dawn accompa- nied by Francese. In a late night broadcast Bor- daberry had rejected army ac- cusations that his government was attempting to conceal politi- cal and financial corruption. ,, 'I. thisWPM FRI-SAT. The abrupt upsurge of Protest- ant violence has led to calls from moderates for an increase of Brit- ish troops in the province. Sources close to the army say another 1,800 men are on 24 hoursj standby in England and W e s t Germany and will be inNorthern Ireland by the end of th3 month. Wednesday's violence and the use of intimidation to enforce the crippling 24 hour strike outraged most Protestants. As a result, the provinces admin- istrator, William Whitelaw, flew from London to Belfast for a meet- ing with leaders of four political parties yesterday. I M*Irtul!
