Page six, THE MICHIGAN DAILY Tuesday, January 30, 1973 P*~i~e Six THE MICHIGAN DAILY LAST IN WCHA: Dekers hit By FRANK LONGO Hockey is a funny game. A team can be really up one weekend and completely down the next. They, can skate like hell on Friday night and then come back on Saturday and skate like HELL. Then again, how a team plays is not always in- dicative of the final outcome. What- ever, it all sounds pretty con- fusing. Well, that is the state in which the Michigan hockey fan finds him- self after the Wolverines' return from Colorado Springs this past day's contest. Friday's loss was of the over- time variety. Michigan fell behind 5-1 after two periods, but some- how managed to come back and tie it up with an unbelievable six goals in the final stanza. Roy Ashworth almost got to play the hero's role in that one. Ash- worth, a senior whose totals for two years of varsity competition con- sist of one assist and twelve penalty minutes with a lot of bench time sandwiched in between, scored three goals for the first Wolverine weekend. It was another crucial.. series in Michigan's never-ending * bid for the ever-elusive playoff! WC H position, but twice the Blue team found itself holding the short end A Standings of the stick. Denver Colorado College came up with icn State the 8-7 and 6-4 victories, thereby: Notre Dame jumping over the Wolverines into North Dakota ninth place in the WCHA with tMinnesota ten points to Michigan's eight. And MichiganTech the losses were particularly heart- Minn-Duluth breaking. Colorado Col. Ashworth scored Micnigan's first goal and then sent the game into the sudden death period with his third tally, which came with less than a minute to play and his team down, 7-6. Unfortunately, the other candi- date for the hero role produced more of a case. Colorado's Doug Palazzari, one of the top players in the WCHA, also turned in the hat trick, but his third goal turned out to be the winning one, coming after 44 seconds of overtime play "We lack that experience around the net," commented Renfrew later. "In that second period we had 16 shots on goal and only scored once." Saturday's contest proved no more satisfying. Three power play goals by Michigan failed; to turn the trick, and the 6-4 loss dropped the Wolverines into last place. Does that mean Michigan is out of it? "Oh, no!" cries Renfrew. And he is right. Minnesota-Duluth, the team to beat for the eighth and final playoff spot, lost a pair of games to Denver this weekend, and remain only eight points ahead of Michigan with 16 points. And in two weeks, who comes to Ann Arbor for no less than an eight-point series? M i n n e s o t a- Duluth, promising a pretty exciting finish to Michigan's home schedule. This week the Wolverines play a home-and-home series with Michi- gan State, who have dropped to third after holding first place for most of the season. Two weeks ago Michigan hosted State, com- plete with a 5-2 score in. favor of the Spartans. Turning it around won't be easy, but sure would be helpful. 11 y .! at least one win, cipped in de- fenseman Randy Trudeau, who tallied a power play goal in Satur- TOP ARTISTS REC TOP VALUES CLASSICS ROCK ORD SALE FOLK JAZZ OPERA $ 29 m$ 39 SOUL SingleRecord 3 4 T' RECORD SET RECORD SET B $3.98 $498 Last Weekend's Results v Colorado Col. 8-6, MICHIGAN 7-4 Notre Dame 8-13, Michigan State 5-5 Denver 6-3, Minn-Duluth 1-2 Wisconsin 8-4, North Dakota 3-3 Michigan Tech 3-6, Minnesota 4-3 This Weekend's Games MICHIGAN at Michigan State (Friday Michigan State at MICHIGAN (Saturday) Wisconsin at Michigan Tech (four points) Minnesota at Minn-Duluth North Dakota at Notre Dame (four points) Colorado Col. at Denver (Friday) Denver at Colorado Col.
