Lee. Dell Walker, a man who
was unjustly imprisoned for 18%1
years in Michigan prisons, spoke
to a law class seminar last night
about prison life and reform.
In 1954, Walker, a black, was
arrested under suspicion for a
mugging he did not commit.
After several days of interroga-
tion and beating, police extracted
a confession of murder from
him. An all-white jury convicted
him of these false charges.
After 181/2 years, numerous
appeals and a series of articles
in the Free Press, supporting
his case, Walker was freed and
the case dropped for lack of evi-
dence.
ONE OF THE aspects of the
prison system which most im-
pressed Walker was the boring
prison routine he termed, "a
merry-go-round which sometimes
led prisoners to wish they were
dead."
To cope with the boredom,
Walker said he decided to teach
himself law. "I spent all my time
studying law. I didn't accept any

of the amusements of the prison,
like sports."
Eventually Walker became a
jail lawyer, an in-prison lawyer
who helped prisoners draft pa-
pers for appeals or other cases
which might come up in the
prison.
WALKER, A short, balding
man who looks more like 45 than
his 61 years, is now chief in-
vestigator at the Defenders'
Office, a private legal firm.
He says one of the most im-
portant functions a prison should
perform is to rehabilitate and re-
motivate the prisoners so that
when they are set free they can
earn their livelihood.
In fact, Walker maintains that
prisons should pay prisoners to
study. "This would be a much
more useful allocation of money
than is practiced at present," he
says.
"PRISON JOBS now teach pris-
oners useless skills," Walker
says. "A prisoner may become
the best license plate stamper
in the prison, but once he gets

out, there is no place for him to
practice. He's got to come back
to prison to do it."
"During 1972-73 Michigan paid
$44 million in taxes for prisons.
But what are taxpayers getting
in return? There aren't 30 peo-
ple in Michigan who have come
out of Michigan prisons and are
making a decent living for them-
selves," says Walker.
Walker said he would like to
do away with prisons as they
now exist.
"Containment is still neces-
sary," he said, "but the contain-
ment should keep families to-
gether. If a prisoner can see his
or her mate, it makes the prison
a more human place; it makes
the prisoner a person and not a
number."
MEDICAL AND psychological
care in prison, he says is "hor-
rible." One must be very sick
before one gets any medical at-
tention, Walker says, and then
the doctor's prescription is us-
ually aspirin.
Walker urged the law students

to take an active hand in push-
ing for reform in society. "The
people in Lansing and Washing-
ton who are on the various com-
mittees *are all old and falling
asleep with their gavels in their
hands. The future is in your
hands," he said to the law stu-
dents.
WALKER A L S O spoke out
against capital punishment. "If
you could pull the cord to hang
your own son if he killed some-
one, then go ahead and support
capital punishment."
Currently a bill is pending in
the State Senate which would..
pay Walker $25,000 for the lost
years of his life. The bill's future
is uncertain as it has been held
up in the Senate Appropriations
Committee since Dec. 6.
Walker says, "The least they
could do to minimize the loss I
suffered is to put forth the effort
to pass this bill."
