Unfortunately, everyone may have to wait until August to get a true picture of the '74 Wol- verines, as a mild epidemic of injuries this spring has hobbled 19 players. At least half of those injured, however, will probably play Saturday, even in their wounded condition. g 0 injuries S besiege gridders * Parts and Accessories { .4 ,. ..: 1:. f ' ,. A com- bination of a winter "layoff" and the fact that scrimmages put 22 Wolverines on the field at the same time greatly increases the chance for injury. "And the big problem," added McLean, "is we didn't have depth, losing 30 seniors. We had less people to start with." Six players can safely be con- sidered out of this weekend's ac- tion. They are: -Eduardo Gonzales, tailback. Pulled hamstring. -Jerry Collins, split end. Knee injury, in a cast. Jack Fairbanks, safety. Knee injury, in a cast. -Matt Caputo, defensive end. Broken thumb. Bill Hoban, defensive tackle. Broken ankle. -Rick Hoschalk, middle guard. Pinched nerve. -Tim Davis, middle guard. Dislocated elbow. And very questionable for Saturday's action is: -Rick Vogele, fullback. Bruis- ed shoulder and pinched nerve. The rest of the injured and the nature of their injuries are: Mike Strabley, linebacker. Pull- ed hamstring, should work out this week. -Phil Andrews, fullback. Pull- ed hamstring, should work out out this week. -Craig McMullen, offensive guard. Sprained knee, on crutch- es, may work out this week. -Gordon Bell, tailback. Slight concussion, should play. -Jim Smith, split end. Both big toes sprained, should work out this week. Jim Armour, offensive guard. Bruised big toe, should work out. -Steve Strinko, linebacker. Hip pointer, should play. Rob Lytle, tailback. Bad knee, hopefully back this week. Subscription to-. -Dave Brown, safety. Bruised shoulder, should play. ' Harry Banks, defensive back. Broken thumb still in cast but will play. Quite a lengthy list. "Yes, we've had a little more than usual," commented McLean. "But we've been fortunate in the past. In the spring it sometimes gets so bad that some teams have to cancel their spring games. "Eastern Michigan has had three knee surgeries and a broken ankle already. It's a hey- day for orthopedic surgeons in the spring., All the players worked on con- ditioning drills during much of the three and a half months since last November's letdown. According to McLean, this helps cut down on, injuries immediate- ly. Another important element in the injury picture is artificial turf. Since its introduction in the mid-sixties, artificial turf' for football fields has been the sub- ject of much controversy. Orig- inally intended to cut down on injuries, the fake grass is now blamed by some for increasing injuries. Michigan has had Tartan Turf for five years in its stadium and on its practice field. McLean said this year's injuries have nothing to do with Canham's carpet. McLean continued, "The com- plaints about artificial turf came from the professional players, who are constantly switching from natural grass to artificial. It's a different situation with us- we're on Tartan all the time. I think the body acclimatizes to it," McLean revealed. And he emphasized: "Our rec- ords haven't shown any more injuries on Tartan than on grass. Of course, it's harder, so you may get more bruises, but no more severe knee injurie. In fact, you'll find almost all severe knee injuries happen on grass."~ I Is your major listed above? Could you use help to defray your college expenses?
