THE MICHIGAN DAILY Rage Three THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Three Ethiopians chase guerrillas, to free U.S., Canadian. oilmen I. ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia ()- About 15 armed guerilla fighters holding five American and Cana- dian oilmen rode horseback through mountains and tropical fruit plantations yesterday, try- ing to elude tribal chiefs who want to free the captives, Afri- can runners said. There was no word of the pos- sible release of the five, kidnap- ed in Eritea Province March 26 by the Eritrean Liberation Front. The guerrillas were believed holding the men to extract max- imum publicity for their cause - autonomy for Ethiopia's north- ernmost province and only Red Sea outlet. EDWARD BURCHALL, general manager of Tenneco Oil Co. in Ethiopia, said he has had no direct contact with the m e : since Tuesday, when African run- ners brought news from the wild- erness northeast of Asmara that the captives were in g o o d health. The runners said the hostages were not tied up and were mounted on horses. Horsefeathers WITH THE MARX BROTHERS ADMISSION 75c Showings at 8 & 10 THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY SUNDAY Couzens Cafeteria Couzens Film Co-op Burchall said he was prepar- ed to sit it out in Asmara, the provincial capital, as long as it took to negotiate freedom for the five. He didn't know how long that would be. "The guerrillas are covering 6 to 10 miles a day in an area of mountains and valley planta- tions," Burchall said. "They go in one direction, thlen in another. They're confined to a certain locality that is their territory." THE AREA includes orange groves and papaya plantations, as well as forbiding canyons and desert. Two groups of tribal chiefs were chasing the guerrillas on foot. The chiefs, seeking to avoid trouble with Ethiopian authori- ties in their tribal domains, were hoping to confront the guerrillas and persuade them to hand over the captives. The guerrillas depend on the chiefs for food and shelter from Ethiopian army patrols. To you, photography is more than a hobby. You may never want to become a professional. Yet, your photography is as important a means of self-expression to you as your speech: You demand the same excellence in your photo- graphic equipment as you do of your photographic skills. The Canon F-1 is the camera that can fulfill any photographic task to which you put it. It can stand up to your ability in any situation. Naturally, a great camera like the F-1 won't ensure great results. That's up to you. Yet-it's nice to know that your camera can grow with you as a photographer. Part of the reason for this is the F-1 system. Since it was designed in totality, it offers total perform- ance. There is nothing "added on" in the F-1 system. Everything works as it was designed to, and inte- grates superbly with everything else. You'Ilspend lesstimeworrying about operating the camera than in shooting. And that's what creative photography is really all about. Controls fall into place under each finger. It's no accident. Pro- fessionalswho depend on a camera for their livelihood have a deep , regard for the F-1's handling. It's amazing how much a comfortable Sharing these lenses and many of these accessories are the new Electronic Canon EF, with fully automatic exposure control, the FTb, now improved with all expo- sure information visible in the finder, and the TLb, great for a second camera body or for getting started in Canon photography.
