FIGURES INDICATE TREND
YD levels possibly ebbing

NEW YORK (R) - The nation-
wide outbreak of venereal disease
may be ebbing for the first time
in a decade, according to prelimi-
nary statistics being compiled by
public health officials.
The number of reported cases of
infectious syphilis shows a 2 per

cent decline in the first seven
months of the 1974 fiscal year,,
compared to the same period thej
preceeding year, according to pro-
visional data at the Center for
Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga.
FOR GONORRHEA, by far the
most widespread of the venereal
diseases, the rate of increase for
July-December of 1973 appears to
be less than 1 per cent, "a striking
change" from the past, a statisti-
cian at the center said yesterday.
The fact that men commonly
have symptoms of gonorrhea and
women often do not means that
men appear voluntarily for treat-
ment. Accordingly, the statistics
for men are considered to be an
accurate reflection of the amount
of the disease in general.
. The 1 per cent rise for July-
December compares, for example,
with a 10.2 per cent rise in gonor-
rhea in men in fiscal 1972, com-
pared to 1971, the center statisti-
cian said. The center is a branch
of the U. S. Public Health Service.
THE CENTER SOURCE said the
apparent inroads into VD appears
i jffh

to be the result of a nationwide
campaign against the disease that
began in July 1972, and which in-
cludes public education and screen-
ing of women.
Despite these apparent inroads,
VD continues to be a major pub-
lic health problem in this coun-
try, the American Public Health
Association said in a report also
issued yesterday.
The association said final fig-
ures for fiscal 1973 showed 809,-
681 new reported cases of gonor-
rhea, a 12.7 per cent rise from
the preceeding year. The 25,080
newly reported cases of syphilis
represent a 4.5 per cent increase,
it said.
Because many cases of VD are
not reported, the U. S. Public
Health Service estimates that the
actual figures are much higher-
at least 2.5 million new cases of
gonorrhea and 85,000 to 90,000 new
cases of syphilis.
A list of cities with the highest
gonorrhea rates, which may also
be a reflection of better reporting
systems, shows these are the top
10: Atlanta; Washington, D. C.;
Charlotte, N.C.; Memphis, Tenn.;
San Francisco; Rochester, N.Y.;
Newark, N.J.; Richmond, Va.;
Portland, Ore. ; New Orleans, La.
