In a related development, Channel 50 announced last night that it is changing its schedule and will televise the Michigan Notre Dame game Thursday evening. * * * Dekers get stoned THE MICHIGAN DEKERS dropped their two game total goal series at Minnesota, 10-5, in the opening round of the WCHA playoffs over spring break. The Gophers went on to defeat Den- ver 5-4 in the second round to advance to the NCAA champion- ship round along with Michigan Tech, victor by 12-10 over Michigan State. An NCAA selection committee chose 1973 league cham- pion and top-rated Michigan Tech to join Minnesota and represent the WCHA in the NCAA's single elimination tour- nament at the Boston Garden this weekend against Boston University and Harvard of the ECAC. Herb Brooks' Gophers will face-off against Boston Thurs- day night, while John MacInnes' Huskies will skate against Har- vard Friday night. The winners will meet Saturday for the championship with the losers vying for third place prior to the title match. Mat machine misfires MICHIGAN'S WRESTLERS did almost everything expected of them at the Big Ten Championships last weekend in Evan- ston, but Iowa's team got hot, qualified all ten members for the NCAA tournament, and outscored the Maize and Blue, 151-123. Fatal to the Wolverines were Jim Brown's surprise rat-tall 6-3 loss at 118 to Minnesota's Mike McArthur, and 177-pound- er Rob Huizenga's 6-3 semifinal setback at the hands of Iowa's Chris Campbell. Bill Davids (134), Jerry Hubbard (150), Dave Curby (190) .and Gary Ernst (heavyweight) won individual championships, Bill Schuck (142) placed second, and Brown, Huizenga and John Ryan (167) took thirds. These eight Wolverines will carry Michi- gan's title hopes at the NCAA tournament this week in Ames, Iowa. TEAM SCORE: Iowa 151; MICHIGAN 123; Mich. State 86%; Wisconsin 66; Minnesota So; Northwestern 36; Illinois 35; Indiana 17%; Purdue 4%; Ohio State 21/2. Swimmers ship out THE MAIZE AND BLUE swimmers competed in the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships last week at the Uni- versity of Wisconsin. For the first time in 14 years, the Wolver- ines did not finish second behind Indiana. Michigan sunk all the way to third, as Wisconsin put on a stalwart performance to cop the runner-up slot before the home-town mob. Afterward, Michigan coach Gus Stager said that "it's going to be hard for us to beat Wisconsin from now on." It's going to be hard for anyone to beat Indiana from now on, as the Hoosiers rested on their talent and splashed to an easy title. Indiana coach Doc Counsilman called his team's per- formance "nothing great and nothing bad," but it was enough. Gymnasts tumble MICHIGAN'S GYMNASTS travelled to Iowa last week for the Big Ten Gymnastics Competition only to be bested by the hosting Hawkeyes, for the team championships. The Wolverines managed a creditable second. The Wolverines were plagued throughout by injuries. Jean Gagnon, Michigan's best all-around man, jammed a thumb and J. P. Bouchard's sprained ankle made Michigan's title hopes impossible. Good Michigan performances included Bob Darden and Carey Culbertson tying for first on the high bar, Bouchard's first place in vaulting and a second place for Monte Falb on the rings. These men qualified for the NCAA tournament. The Summer Game returns BASEBALL IS THE only sport-everything else is to pass the time through the cold months until spring training comes. Baseball is the one game where you can slurp beer in the stands and joke with your friends and not miss anything important. Each game is a tiny chip in the mosaic of the season; forgettable moments form themselves into an un- forgettable gestalt. We welcome this time, although it's painfully clear that the Tigers have far to go if they expect to rise to mediocrity. It is enough to remember the graceful are of an Al Kaline double to the left field corner. If it happens again, so much the better. STREAK I join The MEET! D UM StylistsS t at the Union SportsStuff.
