Then, Campbell claimed at the time, he chased Granda down the street. Campbell's first story then de- scribes Granda turning, pulling a knife, and stabbing the student, only to be chased once again be- fore inflicting more wounds with the knife. Finally, after a third chase, Granda was tackled by three workmen unloading a truck. But this week Campbell told po- lice that his first account was con- cocted to conceal the fact that he had been robbed in the midst of a narcotics transaction with Granda. MEANWHILE, the Ann NMrbor N e w s launched an ill-begotten fundraising drive for the injured Campbell, but had to quickly re- verse gears when the student's confession became public. The News printed a bedside in- terview story about Campbell on Feb. 19, noting that the premedical student might lose his sight and his career. The following day, the newspaper initiated the Thomas Campbell Fund to collect cash for the young man's medical expenses. Dona- tions poured in, and by Monday, nearly $3,000 had been collected. But on Tuesday, the News print- ed the news that Campbell's first account was false, and that con- tributions to the Thomas Campbell Fund would be returned to donors. Campbell yesterday refused to comment on the affair, and has been advised by his attorney that he may now face criminal charges himself.
