But with a perfect 14-0 season, the Wol- verines have accomplished one- third of what they intend to do this year. "We set ourselves three goals before the season started," mat coach Rick Bay explains. "We wanted an undefeated dual meet season, the Big Ten title, and the National Championships." This year's Big Ten Tournament, scheduled for March 1-2 in Evan- ston, takes on the aspect of a na- tionals-in-miniature. Along with aces from four out of the top ten teams, the Big Tens also will in- clude strong wrestlers from schools like Minnesota, Northwestern, Pur- due, and even Illinois. Individually, these grapplers haven't been enough to push their squads to the top of the pile. Brought together in one place, col- lectively they havethepotential to annihilate anyone's ambitions. "I tell my team just two things before they go out there," the proud owners of a 27-meet victory at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, corner of Washington and Fletcher Sts. TIMES .. I PLAYOFFS AHEAD: Icemer By ANDY GLAZER The dekers have been dream- ing about it for a year. They have been talking about it for months. They have been getting close to it in the last few weeks. Saturday night it happened; the Michigan Wolverine hockey team made the WCHA playoffs. The Wolverines weren't sure of a playoff spot when they ended their visit to South Bend with a 4-2 win over Notre Dame, but when Colorado College skated to a 6-6 tie with Minnesota later that night, the amazing Blue were playoff bound. Its 12-13-1 WCHA record gives them 25 points; the most that ninth-place Colorado can finish with is 24. "This is the only league where you can get hot for five or six weeks and win the whole thing," informed Dan Farrell, Wolverine hockey coach. It remains to be seen whether Farrell's skaters can do just what he said was possible. Three weeks ago the dekers swept number one ranked league champion Michigan Tech. The following week they swept Colorado College, and left for South Bend in position to clinch a berth. clinch berth The clinching was slightly de- layed. In the Friday game the Wolverines played about as badly as they have in a long while. Michigan played like it knew it was the winner, and figured that all it had to do to win was to show un. The Wolverines aban- doned the very style of hockey that had made them winners. The i"ers came back like cham- nions however, knocking the Trish all over their home rink in last weekend's fateful Saturday game. What manner of team is this WAol erine scrad? What chance do the skaters have in the play- offs? The answer to the first onestion is more denendent on the the answer of the second than one might think. To have a realis- tic chance of going to the NCAA finals, the Wolverines have to be good enough to sweep Michigan State this weekend. Why? Principally because of the WCHA playoff system. The first place team rlays the eighth team, the second the seventh, and so on. In the second round the team with the most regular sea- son points still alive plays the team with the fewest, etc. Two WCHA teams go to the finals. With that in mind, the Wolverines have one thing in mind: avoid Michigan Tech in the playoffs if possible. If the Wolverines finish fourth, which they can do by sweeping Michigan State, and they would play a reasonably weak team at home in the first round. If any of the teams below them win also in the first found, then Michigan will play someone other than Tech in the second round. The Wolverines should be able to do it. Their forwards have been superb of late-Don Dufek; Angie Morretto; Pat Hughes, Gary Kardos-the list goes on. Against Notre Dame, Greg Fox played about as well as a defense- man can. Add to that super- goaltender Robbie Moore and the spirit that Farrell has instilled in this team and, yes, it's capable enough. But why mince words? The Wolverines are one good hockey team. WCHA Standings 118-Jim Brown Brown and Purdue's Joe Corso are the class of the conference. Brown was fortunate to top Corso 4-3 when they met last month, and both have knocked off everyone else with little trouble. Since the top four finishers in each weight qualify for the nationals, a couple of mediocre people will fill out the ranks here. 126-Rich Valley After a disappointing campaign,1 Valley is going to have trouble scoring any points. MSU's Pat Mil- kovich, the 1972 Big Ten and NC- AA champion, will be heavily fav- ored, and Iowa's Tim Cysewski, Minnesota's Jeff Lamphere, and Wisconsin's Craig Horswill are also first rate. 134-Bill Davids The only blemishes on David's record are a tie with Illinois' Andy Passaglia, and a loss to Iowa's Steve Hunte, who may wrestle in the tournament at 142. Wisconsin's Jim Abbott, MSU's Conrad Calen- dar, and Gopher Steve Wessman round out one of the Big Ten's strongest weights. Davids should be top seed, but there aren't any guarantees here. 142-Bill Schuck If Wisconsin's Rick Lawinger ducks Jerry Hubbard and cats to 142, Schuck will tussle with North- western's Andre Allen - other- wise, the favorite - and Purdue's Al Houisner in the battle for sec- ond. The Spartans' cautious Don Rodgers is an interesting longshot. 150-Jerry Hubbard If Lawinger doesn't cut, "Hub" is going to have to be at his best to reclaim the title. Iowa's Chuck Yagla figures to place, and the rest will be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the windy city. 158-Dan Brink Despite his inconsistency, Brink has a real chance of qualifying for the NCAAs if he can cut out his junior - high mistakes. The top echelon consists of Iowa's Don Holm, Minnesota's Larry Zilver- burg, and Pat Christiansen of Wis- consin. MSU's Scott Wic- kard and Minnesota's Evan John- son both lost to Curby by just one point, and Wisconsin's Laurent Soucie would be a real threat were it not for his recent knee in- jury. Hwt.-Gary Ernst Ernst and MSU's Larry Avery should be able to clean up. The best shots at finishing third or fourth belong to Hawkeye Jim Waschek, Minnesota's Dave Sim- onson, Indiana's Palmer Klass, and OSU's Forrest Waugh.
