"Our match-ups are really crummy. Guys we usually depend on for points are gonna have a helluva time out there. It's gonna be a tough, tight match." "We take a realistic approach to wrestling at Wisconsin," replied Badger mentor Dwayne Cleven. "We consider you (Michigan) on paper to- be better than we are. We're going to have to pull off a couple of upsets if we're going to have any chance to win." FOR. THE W1OLVERTNES, to- night's meet is the fin-l major ob- stacle of a deliberately-rigorous dual meet schedule which already includes wins over four of the nation's ton ten teams: Iowa, Michigan State, Oklahoma, and Minnesota. The Badgers fit right in - they've lost only to Okla- homa and Oklahoma State, and tied Iowa.: Tonight will also be the final home appearance for four seniors who have accounted for much of the Wolverines' recent success: team captain Jerry Hubbard, heavyweight Gary Ernst, 134- pounder Bill Davids and the dis- tictively different Rob Huizenga. Meanwhile, some confusing sig- nals have emanated from Madi- son, and the Michigan grapplers don't quite know what to expect. Originally, the Badgers' fine 150- pounder Rick Lawinger - the man who beat Hubbard for the Big Ten championship last year - had been expected to provide a serious threat to the Wolverine captain's streak of 27 consecutive dual meet victories (one short of Dave Por- ter's all-time Michigan record.) Much to Bill Schuck's dismay, The. Billboard The Michigan Rugby Football Club is running spring practice from 9:30 *to 11:30 p~m. Tuesday and Thursday nights in Water- man Gymnasium. Interested stu- dents are invited to attend. THIS WEEKEND 4 $2.50 8:30 host Ba that match probably won't hap- pen. According to Cleven, the Wis- consin ace has decided to try tol cut down to 142 pounds, where hel would be a clear favorite. "He1 wants to make the cut," Cleven noted, "and if he wants to wrestle at 142 in the Big Ten, this was the. last week for him to make the; move." HUBBARD will meet either reg-l ular 142-pounder Steve Evans, orz untested Badger freshman Tomt Grabot, and should have no trou- ble tying Porter's record.- The other surprising news from dairyland is that Laurent Souicie, who was expected to give Wolver- ine Dave Curby all sorts of trou- ble at 190, is stayingthome this weekend. "I'll believe it when I don't see him," shrugged the Cartesian Cur-1 by "I really want to wrestle that guy." The quiet Ann Arbor na-. tive should lick whoever the Bad- ger's sacrifice in Soucie's slot.he BILLY DAVIDS' response to the' news he'd have to wrestle Wis- consin's 134-pounder Jim Abbott1 would have been deleted from the, soundtrack of Deep Throat. "Ab- bott's even taller than Indiana's Andy Passaglia," Bay explained, "and tall wrestlers always give. Bill trouble, because he isn't able to work his upper body throws and other stuff against. them." Last year, when both wrestled at 126 Davids bested Abbott 7-6 in Michigan's 29-5 dual meet win and 5-4 in the Big Ten champion- ships. Ed Vatch, who destroyed Roger Ritzman 9-2 last year to win the Big Ten Title at 167: Only two Wolverines will be clear favorites tonight. Jim Brown is "frankly, a better wrestler" than Wisconsin 188-pounder Jim Haynes, according to Cleven, and heavyweight Gary Ernst, who pin- ned Badger Glen Vissers at 4:41 the last time they met, expects to pull out of his recent slump with, he hopes, a repeat performance. MICHIGAN'S Dan Brink will be the underdog at 158 against Pat Christiansen. Christiansen's record so far includes a tie with Minne- sota's Steve Zilverberg-- who de- stroyed Brink - and a heart- breaking eleventh - hour loss to Iowa's outstanding Don Holm. The other two matches are toss- ups. Troubled Wolverine 126- pounder Rich Valley pairs off againstrerratic cheese - stater Craig Horswill, while John Ryan has a pretty good chance against sophomore Frank Davies, 4-6 on the year, at 167. "An undefeated dual meet sea-. son is one of our major goals," Bay concludes. "If we beat Wis- consin, we should get it, and con- sidering the caliber of teams we faced, it will be one helluva an accomplishment."
