Schlesinger proposes
shake-up of forces

DETROIT (UPI) - The Detroit
News reported today that De-
fense Secretary James Schles-
inger is proposing a major re-
alignment in the armed forces,
a move which could prove "to
be the biggest armed forces
shake-up since Robert McNamara
hit the Pentagon."
In a copyrighted story, t h e
News said Schlesinger's plans,
which came after seven months'
scrutiny of the defense estab-
lishment, include major realign-
ment and .redistribution of re-
sponsibilities and, therefore, of
forces, money and manpower
among the four services.
ONE OF THE decisions, t h e
News said, is to include creation
of a coastal command with re-
sponsibilities for land-based mari-
time surveillance, reconnaissance
and anti-submarine Air Forces.

aircraft carriers and giving the
Army the mission of providing
high-readiness peacetime exped-
tionary forces now handled by
the Marine Corps.

jealously-guarded roles and du-
ties of the armed forces.

Schlesinger has instructed his
staff to work up plans to cut the
Marine Corps by roughly half of
