I1 Page Eight Long wait over for 'U' football fanatics THE MICHIGAN DAILY >aturday, September 8, 191: FILN BUFFS! I' '' . By SUE STEPHENSON The time was 7:15 yesterday morning. The place was. State St. THE SCENE was hundreds of students, cacooned in sleeping bags, sweat-shirted and clutch- ing steaming cups of coffee, or playing cards on a blanketed sidewalk while they waited pa- tiently in line, not for the regis- tration of their classes, but for their football tickets. The first group of 46 people in line were from the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. Since 8 p.m. Monday, almost 84 hours, they had camped outside Yost Fieldhouse, with visions of 50- yard-line seats dancing in their heads as they curled up in their tents. However, after 21/2 days, the Ann Arbor city police ordered the tents to be taken down. "They said it violated some city ordinance about temporary hous- ing," commented Jim Francis, Grad. "AL RENFREW, the new ticket director, has been very cooperative," added Cliff Lane, Grad. "He said he was sorry we had to take the tents down and if the weather became incle- ment, he said he'd see about opening Yost Fieldhouse up and allowing us to stay in there." Traditionally, the first group in line patrols the line, taking roll- calls every hour or so and check- ing to make sure that there is one body present for every four tickets. Alpha Sigma Phi lived up to this tradition. Orderliness in the line was maintained by Dick McGee, "the cop of the week." LAST YEAR several students from the dental school were first in line. This year the "tooth fairies," as they are known by their comrades on the line, were sixth. "Last year we were in line by Wednesday afternoon," said a slightly disappointed Mike Sharp, 74, "so this year we thought we ought to be out 24 hours earlier. But we wound up sixth anyway. I guess everybody knows it's a super team and with the Stan- ford and Ohio State games," he added with a shrug of his shoul- ders, "I guess everybody turned out." However, all was not hardship for the football fanatics. Thurs- day evening a television was brought to the sidewlak snoozers and the crowd watched the Miami Dolphins-Dallas Cowboys game. "A great game," quipped Fred Metzger, Grad. ALSO, PIZZA Bob's restaurant distributed free pizas up and down the line and the athletic department joined in the festive spirit with a donation of three cases of pop. Finally at 8:30 a.m. the doors to the ticket office open and people bearing rolled-up sleeping bags and blank stares, begin t slowly progress to their final goal, leaving behind them heaps of beer cans, pizza boxes, wine bottles and crumpled styrofoam coffee cups along the sidewalk. . There was no pushing and shoving. BRIAN ZEMACH, Grad, ex- pressed second thoughts about his long vigil for choice seats. "This is a heck of a thing to go through for a 4-6-1 season." And Grant Trigger, 74, group leader for the Bursley dorm sen- ior block tickets simply shook his head and said, "I'm going to get an ulcer from this yet." The U.A.C.
