Threat to Kissinger's

life confirmed; tight
security introduced

WASHINGTON (Reuter) - A
threat against the life of Secre-
tary of State Henry Kissinger
was made over the weekend, the
State Department confirmed to-
day.
Spokesman John King defined
the threat as "what we reason-
ably presumed to be the possi-
bility of an attempt on the Sec-
retary."
He said that based on informa-
tion received from sources "we
had to take it seriously."
Kissinger was heading for
Brussels for the NATO ministers
meeting at the time the threat
was made. Reports from Brus-
sels and from London, where
Kissinger went yesterday, told

of extraordinary security pre-
cautions and of security men be-
ing issued with submachine guns.
Those NATO meetings conclud-
ed yesterday with the United
States and its European partners
resolving to learn from past mis-
takes and put their relations on
a sounder footing.
This was the essential outcome
of two days of discussions here
between Secretary of State Hen-
ry Kissinger and foreign minis-
ters attending the winter session
of the Atlantic Pact Council took
up Kissingers call to revitalize
the alliance, and overcome
American disappointments and
European misgivings that had
arisen over the past few months.
