If we wvork like hell - if we drive ourselves even harder th-,n before from now on- I don't think there's anyone who can stop us. I really be- lieve that."-hick Bay. The heat will be on Michigan's wrestlers from now on. With their top ranking in the Amateur Wrestling News' listing, the Wolverines know full well that any other team can claim a suc- cessful season by defeating them. Several hours before learning of his team's lofty position, Bay distributed lavish praise upon his triumphant grapplers. "We wrestled darn well last weekend," he noted with particular em- phasis. "It was better than I expected." Like everyone else, Bay had trouble finding enough ad- jectives to describe the team's ace, Jarrett Hubbard, whose 4-0 mark last week (including two falls) earned him the dis- tinction of Champion of the Week. On the other hand, Rob Huizenga disappointed Clarion State's Bill Simpson enormously, coming from behind to score a 4-4, 3-0 overtime upset of the defending NCAA 167-pound cham- pion. "It was just a super accomplishment," Bay exulted. "And better match strategy will make him even more successful." Dubious strategy, and perhaps a trace of overconfidence, led to Huizenga's 3-0 final-round -- ---- -----__ Penn State Invitational defeat W restling's Top Ten at the, hands of Nittany Lion by Amateur Wrestling News freshman Jerry White. This loss 1. MICHIGAN probably deprived Huizenga of 2. Wisconsin Champion of the Week recogni- 3.Ioastt tion - he lost to Hubbard by 5. Oklahoma state just one vote. 6. Oregon State 1 Even more important than the repetitious victories of the team's stars - men like Jim 7. Iowa 8. Clarion State 9. Michigan State 10. Penn State Brown, Bill Davids, Hubbard, and Gary Ernst - has been the development of the squad's lesser-known grapplers. Bill Schuck at 147 lbs. has shown constant, at times spectacular, improve- ment so far this year. Freshman Mark Johnson is still having his ups and downs, but there's little doubt he's going to be out standing, before very long. I Dan Brink - Bay's big gamble at 158 lbs. - has come through splendidly. The Wolverine mentor lauded Brinks' "great competitive spirt," chiming that "If a guy is tough -like Dan-you can teach him the techniques he lacks. He's The Michigan Mat Machine will compete in the Midlands Tournament at Northwestern on December 21 and 22, along with such powerhouses as Wisconsin, Iowa, MSU, and the Oklahoma squads. The conflict with finals means the squad won't be able to hold its regular practices, and therefore probably will wrestle at less than full efficiency. The alternative would be a full r."e-month layoff until the at-home dual meet versus Ohio State next January 5 - and the Wolverines know they can't afford that kind of inactivity if they're serious about winning championships.
