Friday, December 7, 1973 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Eleven Friday, December 7, 1973 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Eleven Dekers face off a aist tie Iris By ROGER ROSSITER Michigan hockey coach Dan Farrell is going to play the jug- glling act this weekend in hopes of finding some forward line combi- nations that can produce goals- a lot of goals. "I'm still looking for a forward who's a real leader, a take-charge guy, the kind of guy that makes things happen every time he's on the ice," claimed Farrell in an- nouncing the line shake-ups. The fact that this week's visi- tors, Notre Dame, are the most physical team in the Western- Collegiate Hockey Association should mean a rough, high scor- ing weekend. The Wolverines in- tend to be ready. The addition of Don Dufek, starting wolfman on the football squad, will add a lot of muscle- a good thing to have against Notre Dame. Dufek will be skating on left wing aligned with center Kris Manery and right winger Gordie Cullen. "The Dufek-Manery-Cullen line has looked good in practice," Far- rell noted. "They've been working hard and have accomplished a lot this week." Cullen will be seeing his first ac- tion at right wing after being mov- ed from defense to left wing ear- lier in the season. His biggest as- sets have been his tight checking and strong defensive play which have kept him in the line-up most of the season. Another m9jor change finds Greg Natale moving to a center slot between Paul Paris and Pat Hughes. "We want to take advan- tage of Natale's great puck han- dling ability," said Farrell in ex- plaining the move. A third adjustment to the for- ward lines will be the use of cen- ter Randy Neal as a right winger. Angie Moretto will center that line with Gary Kardos on left wing, at least for tonight's game. Kardos and goaltender Robbie Moore both have been suffering bouts with the flu, but each will start tonight. Moore spent a cou- ple of days in the University Health Service clinic early in the week, and logged only one day's practice this week. Kardos, mean- while, has been slowed since the flu struck him last weekend at Michigan Tech. How much he'll be able to play is uncertain. Davids trailed P a n t h e r opponent Bob Bailey 5-1 at the beginning of the' second period before "gutting it I out" for a come-from-behind 7-5' verdict. What made Davids' victory im- portant was Rich Valley's loss at 126 pounds. When Valley lost 10-4 to two-time National Federation' champion Randy Stottlemyer, -d Davids got quickly behind against' Bailey, Michigan stood in jeopardy of losing the six-point lead Jim Brown had established when he pinned Herb Worthy at the 7:25 point of their tussle. Davids' success took Pitts- burgh's momentum away. And when Bill Schuck handled Ron Selfridge 10-4, it was virtually all over. "We kind of breezed through the rest of the match," confided Johanneson. All-American heavyweight Gary Ernst decisioned Carl Roba 8-3 in last night's final match on the card. Ernst's triumph followed Dave C rby's 5-4 decision of Pittsburgh's George Calcagnini John Ryan returned to the Wol- verines' lineup last night at his old 177-pound slot and battled Jeff Minerd to a 4-4 draw. Ryan, Mich- igan's regular at this division a year ago, resumed his position when Huizenga dropped ten pounds. Freshman Dan Brink took Ray Dallatore 7-3 in the go at 138 pounds. Brink, the Muskegon Jun- ior College graduate who is being counted on to fill graduated cap- tain Mitch Mendrygal's huge shoes, ran his dual meet record to 3-0. District Court Judge Fred Kaess said after a one and a half hour hearing that there was insufficient cause for such a move. He scheduled his final judgement on the suit for Monday. Kaess also denied a motion by attorneys for plaintiff Gerald Faye to introduce a University of Michigan football player and a member of the Michigan band as additional plaintiffs. Faye, a 43-year-old Michigan graduate student, filed suit against Commissioner Wayne Duke and all the Big Ten athletic directors seeking to rescind the athletic directors' vote sending Ohio State to the Rose Bowl instead of Michigan. Faye claims due process of law was not followed in the secret telephone balloting the day after Michigan and Ohio State tied 10-10 and the two teams finished in a tie for first place in the conference standings. The injunction would have forced the Big Ten to conduct a new vote "at which all of the facts are fully aired" and also would have prevented the defendants from holding secret meetings or from making decisions "not based on substantial evidence." Swimmers meet Ilini tonight The Illinois swimming team will be racing around Matt Mann Pool at 7:30 tonight, and according to a relative of a Michigan swimmer, the Illini are going to beat the Wolverines. Who could utter such treason? Roddie MacDonald, brother of Michigan butterflyer Byron MacDonald, says Illinois is going to leave the Wolverines trailing in the Illini's wake. Roddie, besides being Byron's brother, also swims for Illinois. Despite Roddie MacDonald's predictions, the Illini should pose no problems for Gus Stager's swimmers. Stager ad- mitted Illinois is a much improved team, but says' it still isn't in Michigan's class. Illinois is led by NCAA champion butterflyer Greg Scott and sprinter George Congreve, but the Illini lack the all-around talent present on the Michigan squad. Tonight is the Wolverines first dual meet of the 1973-74 sea- son, and although Stager still regards this meet as a season warm-up, he will probably unleash Tom Szuba this evening. Szuba was used sparingly in the Big Ten Relays last week when Indiana easily out-distanced Michigan. -LESLIE RIESTER Michigan-Stanford: TN, Tl: lc _onn l NP -fr a t s . nim ni- - h hstwP § 4 Radley crew-neck shetland from England A way of life...the famous Radley crew-neck Shetland from England.
